I get a series of okays from the rest, but Jocelyn remains silent, fuming in her seat.
I settle at my desk, powering up my computer, ready to actually work for once without my thoughts spiraling.
I’ve barely gotten comfortable when the receptionist pokes her head into the lab.
“Sierra? HR is asking for you.”
Everything stops and for a moment the room feels like it’s been frozen in time.
“What for?” I ask.
She shrugs. “They didn’t say. Just asked me to send you up.”
A flicker of unease moves through me. I’ve only ever been to HR once, and that was on my very first day of work.
“Okay,” I say slowly.
My team watches as I stand.
“What’s going on, Si?” Benji asks.
I shrug at him. “I don’t know.”
As I pass Jocelyn’s desk, she looks up and smirks.
I take in the full shape of her smile. There’s something anticipatory about it. Like she knows something I don’t.
I leave the room and head toward the HR office. My heart stutters, a slow dread creeping in as a single thought settles heavy in my chest... Something is wrong.
I knock, then step inside at the sound of a clipped “Come in.”
The office smells like paper and cold coffee and the woman behind the desk doesn’t smile. Her glasses hang low on her nose as she flips through a file.
“You asked for me?” I say.
She looks up. “Take a seat, Sierra.”
I do, clasping my hands together in my lap. I don’t like this. I don’t like the way my pulse has started to race.
I sit there, my body growing cold by the moment as I wait for her to finally speak. To tell me why she called for me.
Finally, she sighs and adjusts her glasses. “An anonymous report was made yesterday concerning a possible breach of confidentiality.”
My stomach drops, and every nerve ending in my body freezes.
“What?” I blurt out.
