Lilly bursts into my living room like a category five hurricane.

“Why weren’t you answering?!” she demands, already halfway across the room.

“I was on a call,” I say calmly.

She nods, then walks over to where I’m seated and drops down beside me. She’s just about to say something when she suddenly goes still. Her eyes land on the envelope sitting on the coffee table.

Before I can react, she leans forward and snatches the documents.

She flips through the pages quickly, her expression hardening with every line she reads. Her eyes narrow into dangerous slits, fury simmering just beneath the surface.

“They actually did it?” she growls. “They fucking dared to.”

I stay quiet. What is there to say? Up until the very last moment, I’d held onto the naïve hope that they would trust my character.

“They actually served you?” she demands, flipping through the pages again like the words might change.

“The Director did say they would,” I reply quietly.

Her jaw tightens. She looks like she’s one breath away from marching down there and burning the entire company to the ground with everyone in it.

“I cannot believe they had the balls,” she fumes, flipping through the pages. “After everything you’ve done for that company…”

“It was expected,” I cut in quietly.

It’s almost amusing watching her fume like this. You’d think she was the one being sued, but then again, if our roles were reversed, I would’ve reacted the exact same way.

She turns to me sharply. “How are you this calm right now?”

I shrug.

Maybe it’s because I’ve already gone through the panic. Maybe it’s because of Adrian’s call, or maybe it’s because I know there’s nothing I can do in this moment. Either way, I’m not about to risk my health or my baby’s over this.

“I don’t know,” I admit. “I just… know things will work out.”

She studies me for a long moment like she’s trying to see if I’m faking it.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” she asks.

I nod, “Yes… worrying and stressing about this won’t change a thing. What will help is finding proof I was set up.”
