The entire room stills, almost like it’s holding its breath along with the occupants.

Kerry reads calmly. “‘The revised data sets will be transferred once internal clearance is secured. Payment to be processed through the usual channel.’”

She lets the words hang.

I look at Jocelyn and she is no longer sitting as comfortably.

Kerry moves forward, “Now let us discuss the ‘usual channel.’”

Another slide shows bank records, overseas transfers, repeated deposits amounting to six figures.

I stare wide eyed and mouth dropped as the number stares back at us.

“These funds were wired from accounts registered in Luxembourg and Singapore,” Kerry explains. “The receiving account was opened under the maiden name of Ms. Reed’s mother.”

Another document appears showing beneficiary information and a family trust.

“Not in Ms. Reed’s legal name,” Kerry continues, “but tied to her via familial registry and shared tax documentation.”

“And finally,” Kerry says quietly, “we present internal version histories of research drafts.”

A comparison screen appears. It shows my work then altered files, showing clearly data discrepancies and tampering.

“Ms. Reed altered data sets after export to create artificial discrepancies in Ms. Meyers’ version control history. The intention was clear: to fabricate digital inconsistency and construct suspicion.”

My chest tightens painfully as I sag against my chair in utter shock.

“We find Ms. Jocelyn Reed guilty.”

The words land like thunder and Jocelyn’s breath leaves her in a sharp, broken sound while her attorney closes his eyes.
