I don’t need Aunt Harper to tell me who the baby is. I already know.
“He looks just like me,” I say without thinking.
Lilly leans in. “Fuck, you two are practically twins.”
“Language, Lilly,” Aunt Harper smiles softly. “But you’re right, and if I’d just opened this years back, we would have known earlier.”
We go through the album slowly, page by page, each photo painting a picture of a man I never knew but somehow drawn to know more. By the time we’re done, my chest feels full in a way I can’t explain.
I never met him, but from the stories Aunt Harper has just told me, I feel like I do know him, and through them I feel connected to him.
“Can I… keep some of these?” I ask quietly.
She looks at me like the answer is obvious. “You can keep the whole album.”
I blink, surprised, since I was just asking for a few of them
“Are you sure?”
She nods. “You need it more than I do. You deserve to have something of his.”
Carefully, like it was a precious gemstone , I place it in my bag, my fingers lingering on it for a second longer before letting it go.
“That’s actually not the only reason I called you here,” she says after a moment.
I look up, confused.
“I wanted to talk to you about the company.”
I frown slightly. “The company?”
She nods. “Unity Ventures was always meant to go to Andrew. He was supposed to be the CEO and the largest shareholder. When he passed and after it was restored to its former flowery, everything transferred to me.”
I nod slowly, still not fully understanding where she’s going with this.
“You’re his only child… His only heir. Which means those shares, the ones that were meant for him now belong to you.”
My head shakes immediately, the words leaving me before I can stop them. “No.”
