I stare at the file sitting on my lap for a long moment before finally putting it away.

Yesterday happened too fast. Between the meeting with Jocelyn and then Adrian showing up afterward, I never got the chance to go through the file Noah compiled. The thick folder contains everything they’ve uncovered so far about Val’s kidnapping.

I exhale slowly before pushing myself out of bed. After showering and getting ready for the day, I head downstairs while my thoughts continue racing in a thousand different directions. Between Brook, the mystery man helping her, Adrian’s confession, Noah, the company, and Val… my brain feels like it never truly rests anymore.

The smell of breakfast greets me before I even fully enter the kitchen and I just know Lilly is up already… Again.

“How are you always awake before me?” I ask suspiciously.

She glances over her shoulder while flipping bacon in the pan. “Because unlike you, I sleep at reasonable hours instead of trying to rebuild the scientific world at three in the morning.”

I snort softly.

“Sit,” she orders while pointing toward the stool.

I obey, and moments later she places a plate in front of me loaded with eggs, bacon, avocado, and toast before sliding a cup of coffee toward me.

“Eat before you pass out.”

“You’re starting to sound like my Mom.”

“That’s because someone has to take care of you.”

I shake my head fondly before immediately digging into the food because honestly, I’m starving. Lilly finally settles beside me with her own plate and coffee and for a while, the only sound between us is the clinking of utensils.

Midway through breakfast, Lilly casually asks, “So… how did your coffee date with Adrian go?”

“It was not a date,” I correct immediately after swallowing as Lilly hums skeptically, “And secondly, it didn’t really go anywhere.”

“What do you mean?”

I sigh quietly before putting my fork down. “He apologized for walking away and for doubting me and then he asked for a second chance.”

“So what are you going to do?”

“Honestly I don’t know what to do,” I admit honestly while dragging my fingers around the warm coffee cup before continuing, “What Adrian did hurt me, but compared to Noah? Noah makes Adrian look like the Easter bunny.”

“I understand why you’re conflicted,” Lilly says gently. “But eventually you’re going to have to figure it out because both of them want a chance with you.”

I groan softly and lean back in my seat.
