She wipes at her tears angrily. “It was during Benji’s hospitalization that I saw Andrew again… He had just bumped into a woman.”

My lips part and I whisper, “My mom…”

Benji’s mom nods, “After digging around, I found out who she was. I also found out Andrew had cancer. It felt like karma, but that wasn’t enough for me. I lost my husband and daughter because of him. He deserved to suffer.”

Benji speaks again. “When I woke up, I promised myself I would destroy every single person responsible for what happened to my family. Unfortunately, Andrew died before we could get revenge, but then Mom found out your mother was pregnant with you and so the plan changed.”

My breathing becomes uneven as Benji continues.

“Mom rebuilt my father’s company because revenge needs money.” He leans back slightly. “I grew up and hunted down every single man who touched me and my sister that day. With my mom’s help I took them down by the time I was seventeen before focusing on you.”

“But why wait so long?” I whisper brokenly.

Benji smiles, “Because I wanted you to suffer… I wanted your father to watch me destroy your life piece by piece, slowly by slowly.”

“What are you talking about?”

Benji lets out a low laugh. “Do you think Chloe showing up at your school was a coincidence?”

I freeze and beside him, his mother smiles coldly.

“I sponsored Chloe and made sure she got close to Noah.” Her expression twists with satisfaction. “You have no idea how happy it made me watching you suffer.”

I choke on air, staring at them like I’ve just been hit straight in the gut. “So Chloe knew?”

“No,” Benji’s mom replies. “She and Brook were children of two of my employees. After their parents died, they ended up in an orphanage, but I already knew exactly what kind of girls they were… They were ambitious, jealous and selfish. All I had to do was place them in your orbit and let jealousy do the rest. I bet on Chloe while Benji bet on Brook. Turns out I was right about Chloe taking everything from you.”

I feel like my entire world is collapsing around me. I can’t believe that everything that happened was planned. That every heartbreak, every hurt was planned just to bring me maximum pain.

“What about the research?” I whisper, forcing my voice not to shake.

“I faked most of it. I paid people to do the actual work for me.” Benji’s smile turns cruel again. “After watching you from afar for years, it was finally time to step closer and bring chaos directly into your life.”
