For a moment, the world isn’t a storm. For a moment, it’s just them.
“I missed you,” Nolan says, his arms wrapped tight around my neck.
“Me too,” Nova chimes in, planting a kiss on my cheek. “Can we play? Pretty please?”
God, they undo me without even trying.
“I missed you both, too,” I murmur, kissing the tops of their heads. “And I wish I could, but daddy has to get ready for dinner tonight.”
Their faces fall in unison.
“Dinner? With who?” Nova asks, pouting.
“With Grandma and Grandpa,” I explain.
“We wanna come!” Nolan bounces in my arms.
“You can’t-” I start, but the words die when I see the light in their eyes.
“We’ll be good,” Nova promises, her little voice determined. “Please, Daddy.”
I exhale slowly. I don’t want them to come, but I also can’t say no to them.
