Chapter 70
Fuck! I knew I shouldn’t have agreed to this dinner. It’s been nothing but a test of my patience and composure since Noah walked into that door.
I quickly pull my eyes from him and focus on the girl lying contentedly on my chest. My heart is pounding and I hope she doesn’t hear it.
I know why Noah’s staring at me like that; he doesn’t want me anywhere near his kids. After all, I’m a vicious woman so how can he allow me to get close to Nova?
I sit silently as I try to come up with a way to get Nova back into her seat. As much as I want to say ‘Fuck him,‘ I don’t want Nova to be in the middle of whatever cold war is going on between me and her father.
Before I can come up with anything, the girls fire questions one after the other.
“How far along are you?” Iris asks, eyes sparkling.
“Do you have any names yet?” Emery leans closer.
“When’s your due date?” Olivia adds eagerly.
Their excitement is so pure and so bright, it almost makes me forget the heaviness pressing down on me. I answer while still holding on to Nova, who, by the looks of things, isn’t letting go any time soon.
Then Aunt Ava sets down her fork, her voice calm but pointed.
“Sierra,” she says carefully, “may I ask… who is the baby’s father?”
The room stills. Not this question again.
My body freezes and across from me, so does Noah.
My heart races so fast I’m sure they can hear it. I force myself to breathe slowly, but my chest is tight, like a band has cinched around it.
I take a deep breath and try to hide my unease even as I pray she didn’t notice the way we both reacted at the exact same time because that would mean our cover is blown.
I swallow hard, my throat dry, and when I finally lift my gaze, everyone is watching and waiting, but none of their gazes feel as heavy as Noah’s.
“I… I don’t want to talk about him,” I say quietly, the words catching on my tongue.
Uncle Rowan leans back in his chair. “And why is that, sweetheart?” 1
His gaze seems more curious than inquisitive. Unlike Aunt Ava, he isn’t digging for answers, he merely just curious about why I’m raising this baby alone.
I draw in a shaky breath, steadying myself. “Because… he’s not going to be in our lives.”
Ava’s gaze sharpens. “Is that a decision you both made, or does he simply not want to be involved?”
My hands twist together. I don’t dare look in Noah’s direction, though I can feel him. His stare burns into me, like he’s silently warning me not to mess this up.
“The father…” I press my lips together, then force the words out. “He doesn’t want to be involved with the baby.”
