Chapter 73
“Why are you doing it?” he asks, his voice sharp enough to cut.
My brow furrows. “Doing what?”
“Pretending.” His eyes flick to me, cold.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“In the house, with the twins. You pretended to care. But we both know you don’t.” di
The words hit harder than I expect, but I steady myself. “That’s not true. I do care for them.”
I might have known them for just a few hours, but there was no denying I care for them and, as absurd as it may sound, love them.
“Then why didn’t you come when they were born? Why didn’t you visit? Or send a card or something? You had years, Sierra. Years. And now, suddenly, when Chloe’s gone and they’re older, you care?”
His accusations slam into me like a boulder. My chest tightens and my breath catches. For a moment I’m left completely speechless.
I take a deep breath. “It’s my turn to ask why you’re pretending, Noah. Weren’t you the one who forbade me from coming to see them?”
His eye cut through me with confusion. “What are you talking about?”
“I didn’t come because Chloe told me you didn’t want me around them,” I say finally, the words trembling but true. “She said you didn’t want me around you, her or the twins.” 1
I knew the moment the twins were born. We didn’t keep much contact after their wedding, but when Lilly told me about the twins‘ birth, I wanted to come. I’d planned to finish my assignment and come visit. Chloe even sent me a picture of them after months of not talking.
When I told her my plans, she told me not to bother. She said that as much as she wanted me there, Noah didn’t. He didn’t want me coming to see the twins and so I honored his wishes.
Noah stiffens. He freezes for a beat before shaking his head. “That’s a lie. You’re fucking lying.” 1
“It’s the truth,” I press, anger creeping into my voice.
“No.” His voice is firm, almost venomous. “Because I believe what Chloe told me.‘
“Which is?”
“You didn’t want to come.” He answers, his eyes cold and angry. “You told her you didn’t want to come because you couldn’t stand seeing her living the life you wanted with me.” 2
The words sucker punch me. My mouth parts, but no sound comes. That lying bitch. She played us both, spitting lies and manipulating us both just to get what she wanted.
Why would she do that? I wasn’t a threat to her position or anything, given Noah hated my guts, so why the hell did she lie?
“She wanted you to come and you said no. Do you know how heartbroken she was? how she cried for days?”
“That’s not true,” I whisper, shaking my head. “That’s a complete lie. I did want to come but she said you didn’t
want me anywhere near your family.”
“You’re still lying. Trying to make Chloe the villain,” he snaps, eyes hard on mine.
