Chapter 88

“So,” Mark begins, flipping open a notepad, “let’s talk about the incident. We understand you were nearly crushed by a piece of equipment at Bio–Renew?”

“Yes,” I answer, my voice steadier than I expect. “But one of my colleagues pushed me out of the way just in time.”

Mark makes a note, then glances at his partner.

“What’s your role in the company?” Calton asks, his gaze sharp, as though he’s searching for cracks in my story.

“I’m one of the lead researchers.”

“Walk us through what a typical day looks like for you,” he presses.

I fold my hands to keep them still. “It’s pretty straightforward. I usually arrive before most of my team and go through reports, graphs, data, and everything that needs review before the day starts. Once the others arrive, we focus on our projects, mostly research and testing. I usually clock out around seven, though often I stay later, depending on what’s happening in the lab.”

They listen in silence, Mark jotting everything down while Calton’s eyes stay fixed on me. It makes me feel like I’m sitting under a microscope.

“Have you ever encountered anything like this before?” Officer Mark asks gently. “Any similar incidents at the lab?”

I shake my head. “Nothing like this has ever happened.”

“Then can you walk us through exactly what happened that morning?”

I give them the details of that morning, a chill going through my spine as I tell them everything. Reliving it again makes me realize just how lucky I was.

Mark scribbles notes while Calton leans forward, his amber eyes sharp. “Before you clocked in, did you notice anything unusual? Anyone out of place?”

I shake my head firmly. “No. Nothing. Everything was as it always was.”

The two exchange a glance. Enough to twist unease in my gut. Both pens scratch against their notebooks in quick

succession.

“I think that’s all we need for now,” Mark says, closing his notepad with a practiced snap.

As much as I try not to panic, I can’t. I thought that it was just a standard questioning procedure, but looking at them, something tells me there is more.

“May I ask…” My voice wavers before I steady it. “Why exactly am I being questioned?”

For the first time, Calton meets my eyes directly. His gaze is sharp and cold.

“We’re still in the middle of our investigation,” he says evenly. “There’s no need to panic. But we have reason to believe the equipment may not have malfunctioned on its own.”

It takes a while for me to fully grasp what he saying. You know, that moment where you can clearly hear what someone said, but for some reason you’re finding it hard to understand?

“Are you saying… someone tampered with it?” I whisper.
