Chapter 99
Gunner snorts. “And here I thought it was because you love pussy.
My lips twitch, despite myself.
“Shut up, Gun,” Adrian says, but there’s no real bite in his voice. He turns back to me, all seriousness now. “Like I was saying, this is your baby, Noah. Do you really want to kill your own flesh and blood? What if it were Nova or Nolan?”
“That’s different. They’re different,” I growl, my fingers tightening around the glass until my knuckles turn
white.
“How?” Adrian presses, his tone calm but cutting. “Because Chloe gave birth to them, and this woman is the one carrying this child?”
The words land hard. I swallow the lump in my throat and stare at the amber liquid in my glass. It’s almost funny how I’d managed to forget all about the baby and the abortion. I can’t even remember the last time I let myself think about it.
I clench my jaw, my chest tightening like something sharp is digging into it. “Yes.”
Adrian leans forward. “You’re not being fair to yourself, to that woman, or to the child. I know you miss Chloe. I know it hurts like hell to lose the woman you love. But killing an innocent baby won’t make that pain go away, Noah. It won’t fix anything.”
Gunner lifts his glass, smirking. “Finally, someone talking sense.
I ignore him, my voice dropping low. “How the fuck am I supposed to love that baby when I hate its mother?” 2
Silence. The kind that feels heavy, thick. None of them have an answer for that because there isn’t one. I hate Sierra. I resent her for being alive and carrying my child instead of Chloe
Adrian finally breaks the silence, his tone softer now but no less firm. “I don’t know, man. I don’t have the answer to that. But let me ask you something.”
I glance at him warily. “What?”
He holds my gaze. “Have you ever stopped to consider that your hate might not be justified?”
“What the fuck are you talking about?” I snap, my voice low and dangerous.
Adrian doesn’t flinch. “Don’t you find it weird that you’re the only one who hates her?” He leans back in his chair, studying me like he’s dissecting a case file. “I don’t even know the woman, but from everything you’ve told me and from what Gunner’s said, your entire family seems to adore her. Let me correct that, everyone except you, Chloe, and her sister. Don’t you think maybe, just maybe, the three of you might be the problem?” 2
My jaw tightens. Is he fucking serious right now? Because it’s almost word for word what that little voice in my head whispered earlier today. The same one I shut down before it could root itself.
“I’ve been telling him that for years,” Gunner mutters, throwing me a pointed look. “But this stubborn idiot never listens.”
“No,” I growl, the sound rumbling in my chest. “You’re both wrong.”
Adrian doesn’t back down. “Aren’t you even a little curious, though? She’s surrounded by people who’ve known her for years. Your parents, your sisters, your cousins, your aunts and uncles and they all care about her. If she’s
