The Broken Shell

Daniel carried Alina back to the room after bathing her.

The woman’s body was limp in his arms. Like a soulless doll.

He sat her on the edge of the bed. Took a clean towel and dried her hair carefully.

Alina didn’t react. Just sat still with an empty gaze fixed on one spot on the floor.

Daniel opened the closet. Took out a clean nightgown. Returned to Alina’s side and began dressing her.

Lifting her hands one by one. Sliding them through the sleeves. Buttoning the front with slightly trembling fingers.

Alina just let him. Didn’t help. Didn’t resist. Just… existed.

Like a living corpse still breathing.

When he finished, Daniel stepped back. Stared at his wife’s pale face.

“You need to eat something,” he said softly. “You haven’t eaten since this afternoon.”

No answer.

Not even a blink to show Alina heard him.

Daniel walked to the table. Took the food tray a servant had brought earlier. Chicken soup and bread. Light food that was easy to digest.

He returned to the bed. Sat beside her. Spooned the soup with his right hand.

“Alina. Open your mouth. You need to eat.”

Alina didn’t move.

Daniel brought the spoon closer to her lips. “Please. Just a few bites.”

Still no response. Alina just remained frozen.

Daniel drew a long breath. Trying to be patient. “Alright. I’ll feed you. Like you used to feed Junior when he was sick.”

He pressed the spoon gently to Alina’s lips. Trying to force them open.

Suddenly Alina’s hand moved.

Fast. Hard.

Swatting the spoon from Daniel’s hand.

Soup spilled on the floor. The bowl fell rolling.

Daniel was shocked. Stared at Alina who was now breathing quickly. Her eyes still empty but her body tense.

“Alina, you have to eat. This is for your health.”

He took a piece of bread. Tried again.

This time Alina moved back. Away from him on the bed.

Daniel followed. Closer. Holding Alina’s arm with his left hand so she couldn’t escape again.

“Don’t be stubborn. Eat.”

He forced the bread into Alina’s mouth.

And suddenly Alina screamed.

Not an angry scream. Not a defiant scream.

But a scream of pure terror.

She tried to break free from Daniel’s grip. Her body trembling violently. Her breath gasping. Her eyes wide with fear.

Daniel froze.

Stared at Alina’s face now wet with tears.

The woman was crying. Shaking. Afraid of him.

“Alina.” Daniel’s voice was soft. Trying to calm. “I won’t hurt you. Be calm.”

But when he reached out to touch her cheek, Alina moved away in panic.

Almost falling from the bed. Crawling backward until her back hit the headboard.

She curled up there. Knees pulled to chest. Head bowed. Whole body trembling.

Alina cried without sound.

Daniel lowered his hand slowly.

His chest felt tight.

This was his fault.

He was the one who made Alina like this.

He was the one who destroyed her until the woman couldn’t even be in the same room with him without fear.

“Alina.” Daniel spoke in a hoarse voice. “Forgive me. Please.”

But Alina didn’t answer.

Just kept crying. Curled up. Hiding from his gaze.

Daniel stood slowly. Moved away from the bed.

Alina was still crying. Still trembling.

She pulled the blanket. Wrapped herself until only the top of her head was visible.

Hiding.

From the world. From Daniel. From reality too painful to face.

Daniel walked to the sofa on the side of the room. Sat heavily.

Bent his body forward. Elbows resting on knees. Face covered by both hands.

He heard Alina’s crying. Muffled by the blanket but still audible.

Each sob like a knife stabbing his chest.

Was this what he wanted?

Was this the result of his love?

Alina completely destroyed. Afraid of him. Unable to be touched without panic.

Daniel lifted his head. Stared at the mound of blanket on the bed still trembling from crying.

“I love you,” Daniel whispered softly. More to himself than to Alina. “I did all this because I love you.”

But the words felt bland.

Empty.

False.

Because love shouldn’t destroy.

Love shouldn’t make someone afraid to breathe.

But Daniel didn’t know another way to express his love. He didn’t know how to love without possessing.

Without controlling.

Without destroying.

So he sat on the sofa. Stared at his wife hiding under the blanket.

And let time pass in silence filled with crying.

In the downtown penthouse, Margaret still sat in front of her laptop.

Three monitor screens displayed CCTV footage from Alina’s room.

She watched everything.

Daniel bathing Alina. Dressing her. Trying to feed her.

Alina’s rejection. Her scream of fear. Her panicked escape under the blanket.

And Daniel now sitting alone on the sofa. Looking destroyed.

Margaret leaned back in her chair.

Her expression was hard to read.

Part of her felt satisfied. This was what she’d always wanted. Alina completely destroyed. No longer able to be a threat to the Blackwood family.

The woman was now just an empty shell. Traumatized. Broken. Useless.

But another part of her felt annoyed.

Daniel was too attentive to Alina. Too caring. Even after destroying her, her son still sat there staring at her with a

face full of regret.

Margaret clenched her hands.

Daniel should be focused on Junior. On Clarissa. On building the right future for their family.

Not sitting there mourning a woman who was already broken.

But there was something else.

Something disturbing in the corner of her heart.

Something Margaret refused to call pity.

No. Not pity.

Just… discomfort seeing someone destroyed this far.

Even if that person was Alina.

Margaret closed the laptop with a harsh motion.

She stood, then walked to the large window facing the city lights.

Margaret took her phone. Scrolled to Clarissa’s contact.

Pressed the call button.

Three rings later, Clarissa’s voice answered. “Mamah? What is it? It’s late.”

“I need to talk to you. Tomorrow morning. After you take Junior to school.”

A short pause. “About what?”

“About Daniel and Alina. About the future of the Blackwood family.”

Margaret heard Clarissa draw a breath.

“Alright. What time?”

“Nine AM. At the penthouse. Don’t be late.”

“I’ll come.”

Margaret closed the phone.

Returned to staring at the city view outside the window.

Tomorrow she would make sure Clarissa understood her position.

Understood what needed to be done to take Alina’s place permanently.

Daniel had already destroyed his own wife.

Now it was just waiting for the right time to replace Alina and remove her forever from the Blackwood family.

In the west wing of the mansion, Clarissa closed her phone.

She stood in the hallway outside Junior’s room. Had just finished putting the child to sleep after Margaret’s call came in.

Clarissa walked back to Junior’s room. Opened the door slowly.

Junior was sleeping soundly in his bed. His face peaceful. Calm.

She entered. Sat on the edge of the bed. Kissed the child’s forehead gently.

“Sleep well, darling,” she whispered. “Mama will always protect you.”

Clarissa stood. Left the room carefully so as not to wake Junior.

Closed the door.
