Beneath His Control

Emma’s hands gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white.

“Mrs. Helen,” she said, voice tight with controlled panic. “What happened? Is Alina hurt?”

“I… I don’t know, Miss.” Mrs. Helen’s voice trembled. “But her door is locked from the outside. And when I asked if she was alright, she told me to go away. Her voice was-” She choked. “–broken, Miss. Like something terrible happened.”

Emma closed her eyes briefly.

Every instinct screamed at her to drive straight to that house. To break down the door. To get Alina out.

But Rachel’s earlier warning echoed in her mind.

*Don’t go to the Blackwood house.*

If Emma charged in now-without evidence, without legal backup, without a plan-Daniel could have her arrested for trespassing. Could call security. Could spin it as harassment,

And Alina would be even more isolated.

Even more trapped.

“Emma?” Mrs. Helen’s voice was small. Frightened. “What should I do?”

Emma forced herself to think.

To be strategic instead of emotional.

“Mrs. Helen, listen carefully. I need you to watch over Alina. Check on her when you can. Bring her food. Make sure she’s… make sure she’s alive.”

“Miss Emma-”

“I know it’s dangerous. I know you could lose your job. But you might be the only person in that house who can help her right now.”

A long pause.

Then: “I’ll do it.”

“Thank you.” Emma’s voice cracked. “I’m going to find a way to get her out. I promise. But I need time to do it legally. To build a case Daniel can’t fight.”

“How long?”

“I don’t know. Days. Maybe a week.”

“Miss Emma, I don’t think she has a week.”

The words hit like a physical blow.

“Then we work faster,” Emma said. “Can you get a message to her? Let her know we’re coming?”

“Her door is locked from outside-”

“Slip a note under the door. Anything. Just let her know she’s not alone.”

“I’ll try.”

“And Mrs. Helen? If anything gets worse-if you see signs of immediate danger-call me. Day or night. I don’t care what time it is.”

“Yes, Miss.”

Emma ended the call.

Sat in her parked car, shaking.

Then she dialed Rachel.

“Rachel. We have a problem. A big one.”

In Alina’s room, time passed without meaning.

Minutes? Hours?

Alina didn’t know anymore.

She lay on the bed where it happened.

Couldn’t bring herself to move.

Couldn’t bring herself to do anything.

The door opened.

Alina’s body went rigid.

Footsteps approached.

She didn’t look.

Didn’t want to see who it was.

Please not Daniel. Please not him.

But then she felt hands on her.

Lifting her.

Alina wanted to fight. To scream. To push him away.

But her body wouldn’t respond.

Too exhausted. Too broken.

Daniel carried her to the bathroom without a word.

Set her on the edge of the bathtub.

Turned on the water.

Warm. Not too hot.

Alina sat motionless as he undressed her with mechanical efficiency.

As he lifted her into the tub.

The water rose around her.

Daniel climbed in behind her.

Pulled her back against his chest.

His arms circled her waist.

Holding her.

Alina stared at the bathroom tiles.

Feeling nothing and everything at once.

Daniel began washing her.

Gentle. Careful.

As if she were fragile.

As if he hadn’t just shattered her completely.

Alina said nothing.

Didn’t resist.

Didn’t acknowledge his presence.

Just sat there like a broken doll being cleaned by its owner.

The water lapped gently against the sides of the tub.

The only sound in the silence.

Daniel’s hands moved over her arms. Her shoulders. Her back.

Washing away the evidence of what he’d done.

Washing away the blood and tears and violation.

Making her clean again.

As if that could erase it.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered finally.

His voice breaking the silence.

Alina didn’t respond.

Didn’t move.

Just stared ahead at nothing.

“I didn’t want to hurt you,” Daniel continued. “But you were going to leave. I couldn’t let you go.”

Still nothing from Alina.

No words. No reaction.

Just tears sliding silently down her face.

Mixing with the bathwater.

“I love you,” Daniel said. His arms tightened around her. “Everything I did-I did it because I love you. Because I can’t lose you.”

He pressed his face against her wet hair.

“You have to understand. This isn’t cruelty. This is love. I love you so much that I-”

His voice caught.

“I can’t breathe without you. Can’t function. Can’t imagine life where you’re not here with me.

Alina’s tears continued falling.

Silent.

Endless.

“Say something,” Daniel pleaded. “Yell at me. Curse me. Hit me. Just… say something.”

But Alina remained silent.

Because there were no words.

Nothing she could say that would change anything.

Nothing that would make him understand what he’d destroyed.

Daniel held her tighter.

“I did this because I love you,” he repeated. As if saying it enough times would make it true. “Everything-all of it -was because I love you.”

His hand moved to her stomach.

Spread flat against her skin.

“There might be a child now,” he whispered. “From tonight. And if there is, you’ll never leave. You’ll be mine forever.”

Alina closed her eyes.

Fresh tears spilled over.

But still, she said nothing.

What could she say?

What words existed for this kind of destruction?

Daniel held her in the bathtub as the water grew lukewarm.

As Alina cried silently.

As he whispered his justifications into her unhearing ears.

“I love you. I love you. I did this because I love you.”

Over and over.

A mantra that meant nothing..

Because love didn’t look like this.

Love didn’t destroy.

Love didn’t violate.

Love didn’t trap.

But Daniel believed it did.

And that belief made him more dangerous than any honest monster.

Because he would do it again.

And again.

And again.

All in the name of love.

Downstairs, Mrs. Helen stood in the corridor.

Staring at a piece of paper in her hands.

She’d written a simple message:

*Emma knows. We’re coming for you. Hold on.*

But as she climbed the stairs toward Alina’s room, she heard water running.

The bathroom.

He was in there with her.

Mrs. Helen froze outside the door.

She couldn’t slip the note under now. Too risky.

She stood there for a moment, hand trembling.

Then turned and walked quietly back down the stairs.

The note clutched tight.

Tomorrow.

She’d try again tomorrow.

If there was a tomorrow.
