The Billionaire's Insignificant Wife novel Chapter 149

Letter from the Enemy

Daniel arrived in Chicago in the morning after a flight that kept him from sleeping.

His mind was full of Junior, Alina, and Adrian Lawson threatening from behind the scenes.

Marcus was already waiting in the hotel lobby with a tablet in hand and a tightly controlled professional expression.

“Good morning, Sir,” he greeted while following Daniel into the elevator. “Your first meeting is scheduled for ten a.m. You have two hours to prepare.”

Daniel nodded without speaking. His eyes were red from lack of sleep but his focus was sharp.

In the hotel suite, Daniel opened his laptop and began checking emails while Marcus prepared documents for the meeting.

“Sir,” Marcus called carefully after several minutes of silence. “There’s an update on the investigation into Adrian Lawson and Mrs. Alina’s relationship at Lincoln High.”

Daniel raised his head and looked sharply. “What is it?”

Marcus opened the tablet and read the report in a careful voice.

“The investigation team has interviewed several alumni from the same class. The result… there’s no evidence that Mr. Adrian and Mrs. Alina had a close relationship in the past.”

“Really?” Daniel’s voice sounded satisfied. But he tried to restrain himself. Daniel furrowed his brow. “Explain in more detail.”

“All sources said they were never seen close,” Marcus continued while scrolling through the report. “Rarely even seen talking. Some remember them being in the same class but no significant interaction recorded. No evidence of dating, close friendship, or even casual friendship.”

Daniel leaned back in his chair with an expression that was hard to read.

Part of him felt relieved-no evidence of a past relationship that could be used to legitimize Adrian’s claim on

Alina.

But another part felt more wary.

“If they weren’t close,” Daniel said in a low dangerous voice. “Why did Adrian immediately agree to take Alina’s case as soon as Emma contacted him? People don’t immediately commit to difficult cases without a personal reason.”

Marcus fell silent. He had no answer for that.

Daniel looked at the tablet with narrowed eyes.

“Keep searching for Adrian’s weaknesses until you find them,” Daniel ordered in a final tone. “Investigate more deeply. I want to make sure they REALLY don’t have a relationship.”

“But Sir, most of Mrs. Alina’s classmates said-”

“Investigate!” Daniel cut in harshly. “Adrian has a personal motivation for taking this case. I’m sure of it. And I will find out what that motivation is.”

Marcus nodded quickly. “Yes, Sir. I’ll intensify the investigation.”

Daniel refocused on his laptop. But his mind couldn’t let go of Adrian Lawson.

That man was too confident. Moved too quickly. Too… invested.

Daniel didn’t want to miss anything. He wouldn’t stop until he knew clearly what Alina and Adrian’s real relationship was.

Marcus stood to leave but stopped midway. He turned with an expression more nervous than before.

“Sir,” he called in a hesitant voice. “There’s one more thing.”

Daniel raised his head with sharp eyes. “What?”

Marcus took a deep breath. “Mr. Peterson-the head of our legal team-sent an urgent email this morning. There’s an official letter from Adrian Lawson’s law firm.”

Silence.

Daniel felt something cold crawling up his spine.

“What letter?” he asked in a low dangerous voice.

Marcus opened the tablet and forwarded the email to Daniel’s laptop.

“Petition for emergency wellness check, Sir. Filed on behalf of Mr. Richard Hayes as Mrs. Alina’s father. Legal counsel listed as Adrian Lawson.”

Daniel opened the email with tightly controlled movements.

The screen displayed an official document already converted to a soft file.

Daniel read the document with increasingly narrowed eyes.

No expression on his face. No shouting. No objects hit or thrown.

Just deadly silence.

Marcus stood in the corner of the room with a tense body. Waiting for an explosion of anger that might occur.

But that explosion didn’t come.

What came was more terrifying-deadly calm.

Daniel closed the laptop with slow and precise movements.

Then stood and walked to the window with perfectly controlled steps.

He stared at the Chicago skyline with his hands behind his back.

“He really declared war,” Daniel said in a low voice that sounded like a promise of death.

Marcus didn’t dare answer.

Daniel turned with slow movements. Eyes full of dangerous calculation.

“How do we respond, Sir?” Marcus asked carefully.

Daniel walked back to the desk and sat with a relaxed posture but eyes still blazing.

“Prepare a counter-petition,” he ordered in a calm voice but full of authority. “Alina is voluntarily staying at home to protect her health. She’s pregnant and needs rest. I as her husband am only protecting her and our unborn child.”
