The Billionaire's Insignificant Wife novel Chapter 148

Daniel closed the phone and placed it on the desk.

He stood and walked to the window. Looking at the darkness outside with chaotic thoughts.

Then Daniel’s eyes fell on Alina’s photo on the desk-a photo from their wedding five years ago.

Alina in a white wedding dress. Smiling faintly. A warm smile that Daniel had rarely seen these past few months.

Now even that faint smile was gone.

Daniel took the photo with trembling hands.

“Forgive me,” he whispered to the photo with a trembling voice. “Forgive me for not being able to protect you well. Forgive me for letting Junior hurt you. Forgive me because… because I’m the one who destroyed you.”

Tears pooled in Daniel’s eyes but didn’t fall.

“I need time to calm down before seeing you again. I need to think about how to fix all this.”

Daniel placed the photo back on the desk with a gentle motion, then walked out of the study. He left the capital without saying goodbye to Alina.

As soon as he arrived in front of the house, Marcus was already waiting in the car.

“Sir, everything is arranged. The meeting with investors in Chicago has been rescheduled for three days from now.

“1

“Good.”

Marcus glanced at Daniel carefully.

“Sir… are you alright? You look-”

“I’m fine,” Daniel cut him off in a tone that didn’t invite further questions.

Marcus fell silent and focused on driving.

But he couldn’t help noticing that his boss looked like someone who had just lost a major battle.

Red eyes. Pale face. Tense jaw.

This wasn’t the confident and controlled Daniel Blackwood he usually saw.

He looked like a man at the edge of his limit.

In the mansion, Mrs. Helen sat beside Alina’s bed with teary eyes.

Alina lay in a fetal position. Her eyes open staring at the wall but unfocused.

She wasn’t crying anymore-but her body trembled softly. Like crying without tears.

Junior’s words still echoed in her head.

“I hate you!”

“I hope you and that damn baby leave forever!”

Alina’s heart hurt.

The child she raised and loved more than herself. The child who used to hug her warmly and call her “Mama” with a cheerful voice.

Now hated her.

Alina felt a destruction in her chest that couldn’t even be cried out anymore.

“Madam,” Mrs. Helen whispered with a trembling voice. “Please eat a little. For your health. And the baby.”

Mrs. Helen gently pushed the plate toward Alina.

But there was no response.

Alina remained lying with empty eyes.

Mrs. Helen wiped tears with the back of her hand.

“Madam… at least drink something? Would you like tea? You like tea. Let me make you hot tea.”

Silence.

But Mrs. Helen couldn’t bear to see Alina like this.

“Alright,” she said while standing with tired movements. “I’ll make your favorite tea. Chamomile. The one you usually like. I’ll just be gone for a moment, Madam.”

Mrs. Helen walked out with heavy steps.

The door closed with a soft click.

Leaving Alina alone in the silence.

Alina lay still for several seconds.

Then slowly moved. Rising from the bed.

Alina’s eyes that had been staring emptily at the wall shifted to the bedside table.

She looked at the plate Mrs. Helen had left. Then glanced at the small knife beside it-a stainless steel dining knife with a not-too-sharp tip, but sharp enough to wound.

“I hope you leave forever!”

Junior’s words echoed again in Alina’s head.

Slowly, her hand lifted and moved toward the plate.

Alina’s fingers, still wrapped in thin bandages from the rose thorn wounds, touched the knife handle tremblingly.

Then she gripped it.

“I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU, ALINA!”

Alina lifted the knife slowly as Junior’s voice echoed in her ears again. She looked at the knife in her hand with empty eyes, then moved to press its sharp edge to her wrist.

“Junior,” Alina whispered while closing her eyes as fresh blood began to flow from her skin. “Goodbye. Mama… loves you.’

Alina’s Desperate Attempt

“MADAM, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”

Mrs. Helen opened the door and screamed in shock seeing Alina holding a knife with its sharp tip pressed against her wrist.

Fresh blood could be seen already beginning to drip.

Without thinking twice, Mrs. Helen ran and snatched the knife from Alina’s hand with a panicked movement.

“MADAM! YOU WANT TO HURT YOURSELF?!” Mrs. Helen screamed while throwing the knife far away to the corner of the room.

Alina just sat silently with empty eyes. Her right hand was still raised-the wrist showing a thin bleeding wound.

Not a deep wound. Just a scratch because Mrs. Helen came just in time.

Earlier Mr. Harris hadn’t allowed Mrs. Helen to go make tea herself. He called another servant to do it while Mrs. Helen was asked to stay with Alina according to Daniel’s orders.

Hearing the commotion inside the room, Mr. Harris entered with a panicked face.

“What happened?” he asked in a panicked tone.

His eyes immediately saw the knife lying in the corner. Then the blood on Alina’s hand.

“Oh God,” he muttered with a pale face.

Mrs. Helen had already taken tissues and was pressing the wound on Alina’s wrist with trembling hands.

“Quick, get the first aid kit,” Mrs. Helen requested with a choked voice. Unable to continue.

Mr. Harris immediately got the medicine box.

“Why did you do this?”

Mrs. Helen looked at Alina with eyes full of tears.

“Madam… why did you hurt yourself?” she asked again with a trembling voice.

Alina didn’t answer. She just stared blankly ahead.

Then slowly, Alina’s tears began to fall down her cheeks.

“He hates me,” Alina whispered in a hoarse voice almost inaudible. “Junior hates me. What did I do wrong? What did I do wrong, Mrs. Helen?”

Mrs. Helen felt her chest tighten hearing that question.

“You did nothing wrong,” she whispered while hugging Alina tightly. “Madam, you did nothing wrong at all.”

Alina cried harder now. Her body trembled in Mrs. Helen’s embrace.

“He said he hates me. He hopes I’ll leave. Why did Junior say that? I love him, Mrs. Helen. I love Junior. Why does he hate me?”

Mrs. Helen couldn’t answer. She could only hug Alina tighter while crying with her.

Mr. Harris returned with the first aid kit. He knelt in front of Alina and began cleaning the wound gently.

Alina’s wound wasn’t deep. Just a shallow cut that had already begun to stop bleeding,

But the intention was clear.

She wanted to end her life.

“Mr. Harris,” called one of the young guards standing at the door with a worried face. “Do we need to report this to Mr. Daniel?”

Mr. Harris stopped cleaning the wound. His hand stiffened holding the antiseptic cotton.

He was silent. Thinking hard.

Mr. Harris looked at Alina who was still crying in Mrs. Helen’s embrace. This woman who was already so fragile- if Daniel knew she tried to commit suicide, what would he do?

Surely Daniel would impose more rules. More supervision. Maybe cameras in the room or guards inside the room twenty-four hours.

Alina would become more confined. More burdened. Less able to breathe.

And Mr. Harris wasn’t sure this woman could survive with the additional pressure.

“Not necessary,” Mr. Harris answered in a firm voice. “Mrs. Alina is fine. This was just a small accident.”

The young guard looked hesitant. “But Mr. Daniel said-”

“I’m responsible,” Mr. Harris cut in with an indisputable tone. “This incident doesn’t need to be reported. Mrs. Alina is fine now. You may return to your post.”

The guard nodded hesitantly and left.

Mr. Harris looked at Mrs. Helen seriously.

“Mrs. Helen, from now on you must be more careful. Don’t leave Madam alone even for a second. And make sure there are no sharp objects that Madarn can access. Anything. Knives, scissors, glass shards, anything. Understand?

Mrs. Helen nodded with tears still flowing. “I understand, Mr. Harris. I’ll be more careful. I promise.”

Mr. Harris finished bandaging Alina’s wound with clean gauze. Then he stood up with a heavy movement.

“I’ll check this room and dispose of all dangerous objects,” he said while beginning to check the drawers and closets.

Mrs. Helen hugged Alina tighter. Unable to believe this good woman had reached the point of wanting to end her own life.

“Madam will be fine,” Mrs. Helen whispered while gently stroking Alina’s hair. “Everything will be fine. Trust me.

But both of them knew it was a lie.

Nothing would be fine as long as Alina was still confined in this house.

Without anyone realizing, Clarissa stood behind a large pillar in the corridor-close enough to hear the commotion but far enough not to be seen.

When she was about to leave earlier, Clarissa heard Mrs. Helen’s screaming voice. She decided to see what was happening.

And what she witnessed made her smile with satisfaction.

Alina tried to commit suicide.

The woman had reached her lowest point. Already desperate. Already depressed and possibly suffering from depression.

“Too bad you didn’t actually die,” Clarissa whispered with a cold smile on her lips. “But don’t worry, Alina. I’ll make your life even more miserable until you truly prefer death over continuing to live in this hell.”

Clarissa turned and walked toward the exit with light steps.

Her face was beaming. She was happy seeing Alina beginning to lose her sanity.

This was very good progress.

And Clarissa knew someone who would be very pleased to hear this news.

Clarissa arrived at Margaret’s penthouse around nine in the evening.

Margaret greeted her in the living room with a glass of wine in hand and a thin smile on her lips.

“Clarissa,” Margaret greeted while sitting on the sofa with elegant posture. “I heard there was a big problem last night. Daniel hit Junior?”

Clarissa sat across from her with a fabricated traumatized expression.

“Yes,” she answered with a slightly trembling voice. “He completely lost control. Woke Junior from sleep, yelled at him, then slapped his cheek. Junior cried hysterically. He was terrified.”

Margaret shook her head with an incredulous expression. Worry appeared on her face. Daniel had never lost control with his son, let alone raised a hand.

“All because of that damn Alina,” Margaret said in a tone full of hatred. “That woman has driven Daniel crazy. He even hit his own child just to defend that useless wife.”

Clarissa nodded with a thin smile. “Exactly. Daniel is too obsessed with Alina to the point he forgets his real priority-Junior.”

Margaret sipped her wine while looking at Clarissa with narrowed eyes.

“But I’m quite impressed, Clarissa. You’re doing a very good job with social media. I saw your posts. Subtle but effective. Public opinion is starting to move in your direction. They’re beginning to question Alina’s legitimacy as Mrs. Blackwood.”

Clarissa smiled wider. “Thank you, Mama. I’m just showing the public the truth. Junior needs a complete family. And I’m his biological mother. Alina is just… an intruder.”

“Good,” Margaret said while raising her glass as if toasting. “Keep doing that. The greater the public pressure, the harder it will be for Daniel to maintain that fictitious marriage.”

Clarissa leaned forward with sparkling eyes.

“And there’s one more thing Mama needs to know,” she said in a low voice full of satisfaction. “Junior’s outburst in Alina’s room this afternoon-I orchestrated that.”

Margaret raised an eyebrow. “You told Junior to confront Alina?”

“Yes,” Clarissa answered proudly. “I knew it would destroy that woman emotionally. And I was right. Earlier I saw Alina try to commit suicide.”

Margaret fell silent. Then smiled coldly.

“Suicide?” she repeated in a tone that sounded very satisfied, “That woman tried to commit suicide?”

Clarissa nodded. “Mrs. Helen stopped her just in time. But Alina has reached her breaking point. She can’t bear the pressure we’re creating anymore.”

Margaret laughed softly. Her voice was cold and without empathy.

“Perfect,” she said while putting down her wine glass. “The more unstable she becomes, the easier it is for me to prove that she’s not worthy of being Daniel’s wife. Not worthy of being the mother of the Blackwood heir.”

Clarissa smiled with the same satisfaction.
