The Billionaire's Insignificant Wife novel Chapter 153

Dr. Ross arrived twenty minutes later with a medical bag in hand and a face that looked panicked.

The middle-aged woman stepped into Alina’s room with tense posture-shoulders slightly hunched as if carrying an invisible burden.

Daniel stood beside the bed where Alina lay with eyes closed. Her breathing was short and irregular after the exhausting vomiting episode.

“Dr. Ross,” Daniel greeted in a voice still full of urgency but more controlled. “Thank you for coming.”

Dr. Ross nodded while placing the medical bag on the bedside table.

“Mr. Blackwood,” she answered in a professional tone but with tension in her voice. “What happened?”

Daniel explained quickly-Alina hadn’t eaten for almost twenty-four hours, vomited heavily when smelling food, drastically declining physical condition, and the suicide attempt a few days ago.

Dr. Ross listened while taking out a stethoscope and blood pressure monitor from her bag.

Her eyes occasionally glanced at Alina with an expression that was hard to read-a mixture of professional concern and something darker. Guilt perhaps.

“I need to examine Mrs. Alina thoroughly,” Dr. Ross said while approaching the bed. “A condition like this could be dangerous, especially considering… her state.”

Daniel nodded quickly.

“Examine her properly. I don’t want anything missed. No mistakes. Understand?” he ordered in a tone that left no room for error.

Dr. Ross swallowed and nodded.

“Understood, Sir.”

She sat on the edge of the bed and began the examination with careful movements.

“Mrs. Alina,” she called in a gentle voice. “I’m Dr. Ross. I’m going to examine you now. Can you open your eyes for me?”

Alina opened her eyes slowly-a movement that seemed to require extraordinary effort.

Her eyes looked at Dr. Ross with the same empty gaze she had been giving everyone lately.

Dr. Ross checked blood pressure first.

The cuff was placed on Alina’s very thin arm-bones visibly protruding under pale skin.

Dr. Ross pumped the device. Waited. Then read the numbers.

Dr. Ross’s expression hardened.

“Low blood pressure,” she muttered while taking notes. “Ninety over sixty. That’s not good.”

She continued by checking the heartbeat using a stethoscope.

The cold metal touched Alina’s chest rising and falling with shallow breaths.

Dr. Ross listened seriously, her forehead furrowed in concentration.

“Heart rate is weak but regular,” she said while taking notes again. “But there are signs of significant dehydration.

n

She gently lifted Alina’s eyelids, checking pupils with a small flashlight.

“Pupil response is slow. Sunken eyes. This is consistent with severe malnutrition and dehydration.”

Daniel stood in the corner of the room with hands clenched at his sides. Every word from Dr. Ross was like a blow adding weight to his chest.

Dr. Ross continued the examination by gently pressing Alina’s stomach-checking for pain or swelling.

Alina didn’t react. Didn’t even wince.

“Mrs. Alina,” Dr. Ross asked in a more serious voice. “When was the last time you had your period?”

Silence.

Alina didn’t answer. Just stared at the ceiling with empty eyes.

Dr. Ross glanced at Daniel with a questioning look.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Alina,” he called in a voice forced to be gentle despite the tension behind it. “The doctor is asking. When was the last time you had your period?”

Alina blinked slowly. Her lips moved but no sound came out. Alina forgot. She hadn’t paid attention to that after everything that happened.

Dr. Ross turned to Daniel. “Mr. Blackwood, do you know when Mrs. Alina’s last period was?”

Daniel furrowed his brow, trying to remember. “I’m not entirely sure. But Alina always has her period at the beginning of the month.”

Dr. Ross nodded slowly, her expression becoming more serious.

“I need to do blood and urine tests to check several possibilities.”

Daniel looked at her sharply.

“What possibilities?”

Dr. Ross didn’t answer. She focused on opening the medical bag and taking out several empty vials and sterile syringes.

“I need to take a blood sample first,” she said while preparing equipment with trained movements though her hands trembled slightly.

She tied a tourniquet on Alina’s arm and looked for a suitable vein.

The needle entered with a quick and precise movement. Dark blood flowed into the vial-one, two, three small tubes filled with samples.

Alina didn’t react to the needle prick. Didn’t even blink.

Dr. Ross removed the needle and pressed cotton on the injection site.

“Now I need a urine sample,” she said while taking out a small plastic container from her bag. “Mrs. Alina, can you go to the bathroom to provide a sample?”

Alina didn’t move.

Dr. Ross looked at Daniel with an expression asking for help.

Daniel walked to the bed and helped Alina sit up gently.

“Alina, you need to go to the bathroom,” he said in a voice forced to be patient. “The doctor needs a urine sample for testing. I’ll help you walk.”

Alina didn’t respond.

Without wasting time, Daniel carried Alina. Wanting to quickly know the cause of his wife’s illness.

Mrs. Helen-who had been standing outside the door throughout the examination-entered to help Alina in the

bathroom.

A few minutes later, Mrs. Helen came out with a sealed plastic container and gave it to Dr. Ross with trembling hands.

Dr. Ross accepted with a nod and immediately began doing a quick test using the reagent strips she brought.

Daniel helped Alina back to bed by carrying her. He covered Alina’s trembling body with a warm blanket.

“How long until the test results?” Daniel asked impatiently.

“The quick urine test takes about five minutes,” Dr. Ross answered while dipping the strip into the urine sample. “Blood tests need to be taken to the lab but pregnancy tests can be seen from urine first.”

The word “pregnancy” made Daniel stop breathing for a moment.

“Pregnancy?” he repeated in a voice that suddenly changed-there was something different in the tone. Hope. Fear. Or both.

Dr. Ross didn’t answer. She focused on the reagent strip that slowly began to change color.

Second by second passed with agonizing slowness.

Daniel stared with unblinking eyes-his heart beating faster and faster in his chest.

Dr. Ross lifted the strip to the lamplight, comparing the color with the chart on the test packaging.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes widened slightly.

Her breath caught.

“Dr. Ross?” Daniel called in a sharper voice. “What’s the result?”

Dr. Ross turned slowly with a mixed expression-shocked, worried, and something similar to confusion.

“Mrs. Alina…” she said in a slightly trembling voice. “…is pregnant.”

Silence.

Daniel felt something explode in his chest-a sensation so strong he could barely breathe.

“What?” Daniel whispered in a voice almost inaudible. “What did you say?”

Dr. Ross swallowed and repeated more clearly.

“Mrs. Alina is pregnant, Mr. Blackwood. Based on the urine test, the result is positive. And considering the symptoms she’s experiencing and the last menstrual period you mentioned… I estimate the pregnancy is about two weeks old. Maybe a little more.”

“What?!”

Daniel’s world seemed to stop spinning.

Two weeks.

Alina was two weeks pregnant.

That meant…

Daniel counted backward in his head-the time of their last attempt. That night. The night when he was so desperate to get Alina pregnant. To bind her to him in a way that couldn’t be broken.

And it worked.

Finally worked.

“Alina is pregnant,” Daniel whispered again, this time with a smile beginning to form on his lips. “Alina is pregnant. She’s really pregnant.”

The smile widened into something almost euphoric.

“Finally!” he said in a voice rising to a note full of victory. “FINALLY! Now she’s truly bound to me forever!”

Daniel turned to look at Alina lying in bed with empty eyes.

Daniel walked quickly to the bedside and knelt, taking Alina’s cold hand with both of his.

“Alina,” he called in a voice full of almost overwhelming emotion. “Did you hear that? You’re pregnant! We’re going to have a child!”

Daniel hugged Alina tightly-so tightly that her fragile body almost disappeared in the embrace.

“You’re pregnant with my child,” he whispered in Alina’s ear in a voice trembling between joy and something darker. “This is what I’ve been waiting for! Now you’re truly mine. No one can separate us. Not anyone.”

Alina didn’t react. She just sat in Daniel’s embrace with a stiff body. Her eyes blinked a few times. Trying to process what she heard.

Daniel released the embrace but his hands still held Alina’s shoulders. He looked at her face with shining eyes. Then kissed Alina-hard, possessive, desperate.

Daniel’s lips pressed against Alina’s lips with force that left no room to refuse.

“This is what I’ve been waiting for,” Daniel whispered between kisses. “Now you’re truly mine. Forever.”

Alina didn’t return the kiss. Didn’t fight. Just remained still with open eyes staring confused at everything she saw.

Dr. Ross stood in the corner of the room with her face down. Her hands trembled slightly.

“Congratulations, Mr. Blackwood,” Dr. Ross said. A formality. She continued speaking hesitantly. “But, Sir.

There’s something you need to pay attention to. Mrs. Alina is in a very weak condition. Pregnancy with serious malnutrition like this is very dangerous. She needs intensive care immediately or—”

“Or what?” Daniel cut in while turning to look at Dr. Ross with blazing eyes. “Whatever it is. Make sure it DOESN’T happen. You understand?”

Dr. Ross swallowed.

“I… I will do my best, Sir. But Mrs. Alina needs proper nutrition. She needs to eat. If not, her body won’t be able to support the pregnancy. The baby could-”

“MAKE HER EAT!” Daniel snapped in a voice that made Dr. Ross flinch. “What good are you as a doctor if you can’t handle something simple like this?!”

Dr. Ross opened her mouth but no words came out.
