“A-Alina?” he repeated in a suddenly small voice. “Why does Papa want me to go there?”

Daniel placed his hand on Junior’s shoulder gently but firmly.

“Because Papa wants Junior to talk to Mama Alina. There’s something Junior needs to say to her.”

“But… but I’m scared, Pa,” Junior whispered while stepping back. “I… I don’t want to go there.”

“DANIEL.”

Clarissa’s sharp voice made them both turn.

Clarissa stood at the end of the corridor with upright posture and sharp eyes-though she tried hard to hide it with a forced smile.

“What are you doing?” she asked while walking closer with controlled steps.

Daniel stood with smooth movements but with firmness in his posture.

“I want to take Junior to see Alina,” Daniel said in a tone that didn’t invite debate. “It seems he owes an apology for his harsh words a few days ago.”

Clarissa stopped right in front of Daniel with assessing eyes.

“Junior is still young,” she said in a voice made soft but with steel behind it. “Please don’t burden him with things like this. Alina surely understands that children sometimes speak without thinking.”

“Precisely because he’s still young, he needs to learn to be responsible for his words,” Daniel replied firmly.” Junior said something very hurtful to Alina. And he needs to apologize directly.”

Clarissa opened her mouth to protest but Daniel had already raised his hand with a gesture that was polite but

final.

“This is my decision, Clarissa. And I know what’s best for my son.”

Clarissa’s eyes narrowed slightly-there was anger flashing there but she suppressed it with impressive control.

“Alright,” she finally said with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “If that’s your decision.”

Clarissa crouched in front of Junior and stroked his cheek gently.

“Mama will wait in the room, sweetie,” she whispered in a voice full of false concern. “If Junior needs Mama, call right away, okay?”

Junior nodded with eyes still full of fear.

Clarissa stood and walked past Daniel. The corner of her eye glanced at Daniel with barely hidden anger.

As soon as Clarissa disappeared at the end of the corridor, Daniel knelt again in front of Junior.

“Come on,” he said while taking Junior’s hand gently. “Papa will accompany Junior.”

They walked toward Alina’s room with slow steps-Junior kept pulling Daniel’s hand, his body tense with clear

resistance.

When they arrived at Alina’s bedroom door, Junior stopped completely.

His feet seemed glued to the floor. His breathing started to quicken.

“Papa… I can’t,” he whispered in a trembling voice. “I’m scared.”

Daniel knelt again and turned Junior’s body to face him.

“Junior,” Daniel called in a very gentle voice-a tone he rarely used with anyone including his son. “Mama Alina isn’t dangerous. She loves Junior very much. So Junior doesn’t need to be afraid of her.”

Junior looked at Daniel with teary eyes.

“But…”

“Junior remember, a few days ago you said something bad to Mama Alina?”

Junior fell silent, then nodded.

“That was very hurtful to Mama Alina. She loves Junior. She’s taken care of Junior since he was little. And Junior’s words must have broken her heart.”

Tears began to fall down Junior’s cheeks.

Actually, he regretted saying those mean things. Junior felt bad and couldn’t sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, Alina’s crying face always appeared. And somehow it caused pain in his heart.

Daniel wiped Junior’s tears with his thumb.

“Papa wants Junior to apologize. You keep learning to be responsible and admit mistakes. Will Junior do it?”

Junior was silent for a moment, then looked at Daniel with doubt. “What if Alina doesn’t want to forgive me? She might hate me now.”

Dániel smiled thinly-a smile full of something similar to sadness.

“Mama Alina doesn’t hate Junior,” he answered with certainty. “She loves Júnior. Loves him very much. And people who love… they always want to forgive.”

Junior fell silent, staring at Alina’s bedroom door with still doubtful eyes.

“Junior doesn’t have to say much,” Daniel continued while standing and taking his son’s hand again. “Just say’ sorry’. That’s enough.”

Junior took a trembling breath.

“Okay,” he finally whispered. “I’ll try, Pa.”

“Good boy.”

Daniel opened Alina’s bedroom door with slow movements.

The room was still dim-only the table lamp was on with soft yellow light.

Alina sat in a chair near the window with the IV line still attached to her arm. Her posture was stiff. Her eyes stared blankly toward the closed curtains.

“Alina,” Daniel called in a voice that sounded cheerful. “Someone wants to see you.”

Alina didn’t react to Daniel’s voice.

“Junior wants to talk to you.”

Alina’s head immediately turned when she heard Junior’s name. She looked at Junior intently. Her eyes-which had been empty and lifeless-suddenly came alive with amazing intensity.

Junior walked past the threshold with a small tense body and eyes full of fear. As soon as he realized Alina was looking at him, Junior’s body immediately froze.

His feet seemed planted in the floor. His hands clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

Daniel walked to Alina’s side and sat in the chair next to her-his position protective but also possessive.

“Junior has something he wants to say to you,” Daniel said while looking at Alina with eyes seeking a reaction.

Then he looked at Junior and nodded-a clear gesture: come on, do it now.

Junior swallowed hard.

His feet moved forward with very slow steps. He stopped right in front of Alina-about one meter away.

Alina looked at Junior with unblinking eyes.

Her eyes traced every detail-the face that was bigger than the last time she truly saw him clearly, the hair that was slightly longer, the new clothes she had never seen.

Alina wanted to hug Junior.

Wanted to pull him into an embrace and never let go.

But Junior’s previous words echoed in her head-

“I hate you.

“I hope you and that damn baby leave forever.”

–and Alina’s body froze.

Alina realized Junior was keeping his distance from her. She could also see the fear in Junior’s eyes.

Very clear fear.

The child who used to hug her every morning with cheerful laughter-now stood in front of her with a body trembling with fear.

That was more painful than hatred.

Junior looked at Alina with eyes that didn’t dare meet directly. He stared at the floor. His hands clenched tightly at his sides.

“A-Alina,” he called in a very small voice-almost inaudible. “I… I want to say…

His voice broke.

Tears began to pool in his eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he continued in a broken voice. “Sorry because I said mean things. Sorry because I said I hate you. Sorry because… because I made you cry.”

Tears fell down Junior’s cheeks.

“I don’t know why I said that. I… I didn’t mean it.”

Alina felt something break in her chest.

Tears flowed endlessly down her cheeks-but there was no sound. No sobs. Just tears falling silently.

Alina looked at Junior crying in front of her–the small child who looked so lost and scared.

Her hand lifted slightly-an instinctive movement to touch, to comfort.

But Junior flinched backward.

His body reacted with fear to Alina’s movement.

And Alina’s hand fell back to her lap.

The distance between them-though only one meter-felt like an uncrossable chasm.

They were in the same room.

But separated by something invisible yet very real.

Junior saw Alina’s tears and his body trembled harder.

“I-I already apologized,” he whispered in a voice full of panic. “Papa, I already said sorry. Can… can I leave now?”

Daniel was silent for a moment.

Actually, he wanted Junior to stay longer. Wanted to give him and Alina a chance to talk. To repair the broken relationship. Because Daniel knew-deep down-Alina needed Junior.

But he also saw the genuine fear in his son’s eyes.

And the clock already showed ten at night-too late for a child Junior’s age.

“Alright,” Daniel finally said in a slightly disappointed tone. “Junior has done the right thing. Papa is proud.”

Junior immediately turned with a movement that was almost too fast, like running away.

“Mrs. Helen,” Daniel called toward the door.

Mrs. Helen-who had been standing outside the whole time-entered with a face full of sadness seeing the interaction that had just occurred.

“Take Junior to his room,” Daniel ordered. “And make sure he’s ready for bed.”
