The Billionaire's Intern (Maya Thompson) novel Chapter 384

Chapter 173: A Bloodline Unspoken-2

“And that’s when her world began to stir in a different direction,” Dahlia said quietly. “The Spencers are socially active, present, unavoidable. That’s when the noise started to seep in, slowly at first, then more insistently. And about a year into that marriage, she had my mother.

Maya felt something tighten in her chest, the weight of generations pressing into her in a way she hadn’t expected.

“And as the world knows it now,” Dahlia went on, “my mother married into the Moretti family.”

“And then there was me.”

She tilted her head slightly, thoughtful.

“The Harrington bloodline never vanished,” she said. “It simply thinned-passed quietly through generations, softened by marriage.”

Dahlia met Maya’s eyes at last.

“My father never knew,” she said simply. “That’s how it was back then. The focus was always on the men-their names, their lineage, their influence. Never the women.”

Her voice remained calm, but there was steel beneath it.

“So my mother never spoke of it,” Dahlia finished. “To the world, she was only a Spencer. And a Moretti.”

Maya’s breath caught.

“This house,” Dahlia continued, gesturing around them, “was passed from my

great-grandmother to my grandmother. It became her place of silence. Her escape. My mother never knew about it either.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

“When I was young, my grandmother used to bring me here,” Dahlia said softly. “What my mother believed were simple day trips…” A faint smile touched her lips. “They were never just that.”

She rested her hand against the wood again.

“She brought me here to tell me stories-about our family, about where we came from. Things that couldn’t be written down. When I turned thirteen, she fell ill. Two years later, she

was gone.”

Dahlia inhaled slowly.

“But before she passed, she transferred this place into my name.” She shook her head gently. “Not through a will-intentionally so.”

Maya felt the weight of that choice settle in her chest as Dahlia’s eyes met hers.

“She didn’t want me to simply inherit a property. She wanted to give me something wealth could never buy-something far more precious.”

The garden fell quiet around them, the tree standing tall, patient, as it always had.

“This,” Dahlia finished, her hand resting against the carved initials once more, “has always been a place for the women in my family. A place where we could exist without titles. Without expectation.”

She met Maya’s eyes, something resolute and tender in her gaze.

“I run the Harrington interests in Europe quietly,” Dahlia said. “From the shadows, as you might say. The people who are allowed to set foot on this property are few-carefully chosen, deeply trusted. They know who they serve, and more importantly, they know how to remain u

nseen.”

Her gaze swept the garden, measured and calm.

“That’s why this place has been preserved. It’s never abandoned. Someone is always watching over it-just not in ways the world notices.”

Her gaze flicked briefly to Kim, standing at a careful distance, close enough to see-far enough not to intrude-before settling on Maya again.

“When I need solitude, I come here with Kim. We have ways of keeping Blackwood security at a distance. The same goes for the Morettis.” A faint, knowing smile. “Discretion is a skill, and we’ve had generations to perfect it.”
