"Are you sure she only brought one person?"
Meiko Fujii's mentor was notoriously cautious.
His identity could not be exposed, and his trip to Solenia had to remain an absolute secret.
Had he not contracted this illness when he left back then, he likely would have never returned in his lifetime.
"It is just one person, but..."
Meiko Fujii paused.
This did nothing to ease her mentor's anxious state.
Yet, his tone remained unusually gentle. "What is it?"
"Is there a problem with the cousin?"
Meiko Fujii felt it wasn't a major issue. "Her cousin looks like a street thug, definitely not a respectable guy."
Dewitt—the so-called unrespectable guy!
You're the unrespectable one! Your whole family is unrespectable!
The mentor, however, breathed a sigh of relief.
Still, being naturally cautious, he gave his student a warning.
"Meiko, you are my most brilliant student. In critical moments, you know what needs to be done, right?"
The mentor leaned against the headboard. His face was currently covered in a dense layer of black spots, making him look horrifying.
His once handsome features had become entirely distorted under the plague of dark patches.
Meiko Fujii bowed respectfully. "Yes, I understand!"
The mentor waved his hand, and Meiko Fujii walked out.
When she came out, she looked at Claire with a slightly apologetic expression. "Claire, my mentor is unwell, and his temper is... he doesn't see outsiders."
"You are a doctor, so you may go in."
Claire didn't mind much.
If there truly was a patient inside, such a request was perfectly reasonable.
She turned her head to look at Dewitt.
Dewitt nodded at her.
He would be fine waiting outside alone.
Claire trusted her cousin Dewitt completely.
Dewitt didn't care what he drank.
"It's fine. I'm not thirsty."
"I'll brew some tea for you." Even though he said he wasn't thirsty, Meiko Fujii didn't dare be impolite.
Dewitt let her do as she pleased.
Meanwhile, Claire frowned as she entered the patient's bedroom.
The curtains were drawn completely shut, and there was zero ventilation.
There was only a single, dim lamp on the nightstand.
"Hello, I'm Claire."
Claire tried to see the person on the bed by the faint light.
The figure on the bed was entirely obscured. Even as he sat up against the headboard, the lighting was nowhere near sufficient for a medical examination.
"May I ask your name?"
"Can I turn on the light? If I can't, I'm afraid I won't be able to examine you."
"Can't you examine me like this?" the man leaning against the headboard rasped.
