Silas raised an eyebrow. "Meiko Fujii claims she was raised by Frederick Vane and was just following his orders."
"Is that what her file says?" Claire asked, her curiosity piqued.
Silas nodded. "Yes, before coming here, we pulled all her exchange student records from The Cabinda University."
"She's an orphan, adopted by Vane."
"I suspect Vane isn't her real mentor," Claire said, frowning at Silas.
Silas froze. If Meiko's teacher wasn't Vane, then what was her actual motive for being here?
Was all that acting with Vane just a ruse to lure Claire back to Sundara?
"Do you have any proof of this?"
Without evidence, it was dangerous to jump to conclusions.
Claire recalled Meiko's intense fascination with medical science. "She's a doctor with a deep interest in traditional medicine."
"That means her true mentor must at least be a medical professional."
"Foster—I mean, Vane—that old bastard clearly isn't a doctor."
"He's a physicist."
"I can buy that he's Meiko Fujii's adoptive father, but there's no way he's her teacher."
"Besides, when I mentioned earlier that Vane's condition was incurable, he didn't seem all that concerned."
He wasn't worried about being incurable, yet he was obsessed with getting Claire to treat him. Was the man delusional?
"Why wouldn't he be worried? Is he not afraid to die?"
Silas asked instinctively.
But the answer clicked into place a second later.
Did someone in Sundara have a cure for him?
"I accidentally provoked him earlier, and he claimed his body could be sacrificed for medical science."
"It sounded like he believed he could swap bodies—maybe even transfer his brain."
"He's obsessed with my mathematical genius. I think he planned to use some twisted procedure to steal my body for himself!"
