Without a second of hesitation, Claire twisted the cap off a water bottle.
Before she could douse the flames, the three bears caught the sound of her movement.
Dane caught onto her plan instantly, snatching the bottle from her hands and splashing the water over the campfire.
The black bears immediately shifted their predatory glare toward him.
Naturally, Claire wasn't spared from their wrath either.
As the massive beasts lunged at them, Dane stepped firmly in front of Claire, shielding her with his body.
Rory and Jace moved in perfect sync; she drew a custom tactical baton, while he unfurled a steel combat whip.
Despite her slender frame, Rory possessed terrifying raw strength, complementing Jace's fluid, unpredictable martial arts perfectly.
Brooks and River also leaped into the fray, leaving Claire and Dane safely out of the immediate crossfire for the moment.
With the cabin doors thrown wide open, the men outside could no longer play dead.
Silas and Miller charged in, their respective tactical teams right behind them.
They came heavily armed; as ferocious as the three bears were, they stood no chance against trained soldiers with firepower.
Still, the creatures had incredibly thick hides and were legally protected wildlife.
Refusing to use lethal force, the men aimed solely for their limbs, but the frenzied bears still managed to maul several soldiers in the chaos.
Thankfully, the injuries were minor flesh wounds, nothing life-threatening.
Eventually, the three beasts collapsed, leaving a pool of blood seeping into the dirt.
"They're alive, but barely hanging on."
Claire's complexion was ghostly pale as she kept her distance, watching the fallen predators from afar.
She and Dane had already retreated from the wrecked cabin to a safer vantage point.
Elias had quietly slipped out to join them.
They had no choice; lacking combat skills, sneaking out unscathed was a victory in itself.
But the momentary relief shattered as a new threat emerged from the shadows.
"Wolves!"
Claire spotted them first, though Dane's sharp gaze tracked them just as quickly.
A massive pack of gray wolves had silently encircled their entire position.
Claire could have sworn she saw a chilling, calculated intelligence gleaming in one of the wolves' eyes.
It was biding its time!
That was undoubtedly the alpha, commanding the pack and waiting for the humans and bears to exhaust each other before making its move.
