"I never said that. I just think certain people shouldn't make grand claims."
"After all, someone arrogant enough to make several esteemed professors wait for them clearly lacks basic manners. I bet your medical skills are completely exaggerated, too."
Evie Grant refused to admit that she was simply consumed with jealousy over Claire.
Claire wasn't just vastly prettier than her; she was also far more accomplished.
Listening to her professor and senior peers shower Claire with praise made Evie physically sick with envy.
But now that she had backed herself into a corner, she clung desperately to the fact that Claire had kept them waiting.
The leading experts had arrived that morning, only to find out Claire was still asleep.
Everyone had rushed here to get critical firsthand intel, and this girl was just sleeping in!
She acted as if her time was somehow more valuable than that of top-tier professors!
Evie herself had packed in a frantic rush, not even having time to grab her expensive makeup or designer clothes, which only fueled her bitter resentment.
So, hearing that Claire had been sleeping the whole time sent her over the edge.
If Claire knew what was going through her head, she would have pointed out that no one forced Evie to come—she had pushed her way onto the trip, so she had only herself to blame.
"Then I truly apologize for keeping you waiting," Claire replied smoothly, amused that this girl was throwing a tantrum over her nap.
"Evie Grant!" Professor Quentin Hastings barked, appalled that his niece was using Claire's sleep deprivation as an attack.
"What nonsense are you spewing!"
He honestly wondered if Evie had a functioning brain in her head.
He deeply regretted ever taking her on as a grad student; she was an absolute nightmare!
Dane cast an icy glare at Evie. "You accuse Claire of being late, but do you realize that if you all hadn't insisted on coming, she would already be back in Cabinda resting?"
"It seems none of you actually need any firsthand information from Claire. Why don't you just head straight up the mountain and save yourselves the precious time!"
He respected these experts because of their brilliance in their respective fields.
But that didn't mean he had to tolerate blatant disrespect from anyone in their entourage.
This student clearly had no common sense, but were the experts equally clueless?
