"Nobody move. We are going to the elevator."
With the barrel still pressed agonizingly against Claire's spine, The Assassin began forcing her toward the elevators.
Claire cooperated perfectly.
She didn't have much of a choice. She had to play the role of the terrified civilian, especially with a loaded gun jammed into her back!
Jace immediately slipped into the stairwell, sliding down the handrails to bypass two floors before stopping to call an elevator.
Perfect timing. The doors slid open!
Jace stepped inside, breathing normally, completely relaxed.
He held his phone up, staring at the screen like any oblivious guy scrolling through social media.
The Assassin dug the gun slightly harder into Claire's back, her eyes snapping to Jace with intense suspicion.
But the guy didn't seem like a threat at all.
He was slouching against the wall of the elevator, completely absorbed in his phone.
Despite his harmless appearance, The Assassin refused to drop her guard for even a second.
When they reached the lobby, Jace strolled out, and The Assassin shoved Claire out behind him.
Special Security and the local precinct were already fully aware of the situation.
They had locked down the perimeter of the building.
The moment the killer stepped outside, the trap would spring.
"Take a guess. How many cops are waiting for us out there?"
As they walked toward the sliding doors, The Assassin actually sounded amused enough to make small talk.
"I'm guessing absolutely none," Claire replied flatly. The woman asked for a guess, not the truth.
The Assassin obviously didn't believe for a second that the lobby was completely clear.
But she desperately hoped it was, just so she could make a clean getaway.
As they stepped through the doors, The Assassin was shocked to see absolutely no uniforms. Even the hospital security guards were still sprinting down the stairs from the upper floors.
The poor guards had just rushed up to the ward, only to hear the suspect was already in the lobby.
They couldn't catch the elevator, and running down six flights of stairs had left them gasping for air.
While the guards couldn't keep up, Rory had shadowed them the entire way down. She remained hidden in the background, waiting for the perfect moment to strike without spooking the killer.
Jace, meanwhile, was still walking just a few paces away from them.
He acted completely oblivious to the hostage situation unfolding inches away.
