"Our grandfather died because of people from Sundara. He died on the battlefield, so she hated the country."
"In her eyes, my cousin was a traitor."
Valerie shook her head and sighed.
In families like theirs, elders generally didn't approve of sending their children to study in Sundara.
Her cousin had been completely obsessed, secretly applying for the program and leaving without contacting the family for years.
Her aunt must have felt a mixture of deep love and bitter resentment.
After Honoria returned, her relationship with her mother remained strained.
"Did they only fight that one time, or did your aunt ever say anything similar again?"
Claire found it strange. The daughter was weird for insisting on studying in Sundara.
And the mother was weird for wanting to disown her daughter just for studying abroad.
Even if she hated Sundara, unless Honoria had done something treasonous, it shouldn't have been a capital offense.
But considering how taboo the country seemed to Valerie's aunt, disowning her was entirely possible.
Yelling at her during a drunken argument actually seemed like a mild reaction.
"No."
Valerie's expression darkened. "My aunt has already passed away."
Claire looked confused. "I'm sorry. Was she sick?"
"A car accident." Valerie slammed her fist angrily against the railing. "A drunk driver in a massive truck. You have no idea how horrific it was."
Valerie's own mother had died early, and her aunt had treated her like a biological daughter since childhood.
Her aunt's death was a hurdle Valerie simply couldn't get over.
"That is truly tragic." Claire didn't quite know how to comfort her.
"Did your cousin ask to come along tonight?" Claire smoothly changed the subject.
Valerie blinked, entirely surprised that Claire had guessed it.
