With her stellar academic record, getting accepted should have been a guaranteed success.
But her parents had forcefully altered her application choices, claiming her current university offered her a guaranteed scholarship, and forbade her from taking the entrance exam for The Cabinda University.
They constantly nagged her, insisting that she was better off staying where she had already adapted, rather than fighting tooth and nail to get into a school in Cabinda.
She had managed to return to the city anyway, but ended up missing her grad school interview.
She had been hit with a severe bout of food poisoning that kept her bedridden all day!
Seraphina strongly suspected her parents had slipped laxatives into her meals.
But she had no proof.
Instead, her parents turned around and berated her, claiming she had grown too rebellious after spending a few years away from home.
Left with no other choice, Seraphina returned to her alma mater for her master's.
Once she finally finished her degree, she thought she could finally go back to Cabinda.
To her dismay, her parents announced they had already secured an internship for her in the province where she had been studying.
They were dead set on keeping her away from the capital.
So, she had sneaked back.
Upon hearing that her sister had returned to the country, Seraphina simply couldn't hold back anymore.
The corporate headquarters of her internship company happened to be in Cabinda, so she requested a transfer.
Her parents had no idea she was back, but Jocelyn had been messaging her every day, making sure to mention that she had seen Owen.
Owen wasn't the only guy who had ever liked her, but he was the only one who had chosen her over Jocelyn when they were both in the picture.
Seraphina couldn't bear the thought of Jocelyn stealing Owen too.
That was why she had lost her composure and rushed back.
The moment she returned, she went straight to find him.
Luckily for her, Owen hadn't changed his contact information.
"I don't have regrets, I just..." Seraphina couldn't bring herself to lie.
But she didn't want to tell the truth, either.
She still had her pride, even if that pride was completely worthless in Owen's eyes.
"I'm not here to listen to whether you have regrets or not," Owen interrupted, cutting off her hesitation.
"I agreed to have dinner with you today just to make it clear that we broke up a long time ago. We are strangers now."
"There's no reason for us to ever meet again."
His immediate thought was that they had been trailing him.
But he quickly brushed it off. That made no sense.
Why would his cousins bother stalking him?
"We're just here to eat. What a coincidence to see you here too."
Claire shot him a beaming smile.
"Who knew we'd catch you on a date, or that you'd end up chasing the poor girl away."
"I wasn't on a date," Owen deadpanned.
Seraphina had asked to see him, and he had simply indulged her.
"Was that your first love?"
Claire asked innocently.
"Yes. No. What does first love even mean? Stop overthinking things."
Owen refused to admit to it.
But Claire already had it all figured out.
