**Chapter 678 The Bargain**
Victor remained silent, his thoughts swirling in a tempest of uncertainty.
The stillness between them felt as though it could stretch into eternity. Finally, he broke the silence, his voice a mere whisper, heavy with resignation. “Fine.”
His tone was as faint as a distant echo, carrying a weight that seemed to sap the very essence from his being. In that moment, the spark in his eyes dimmed, leaving behind a hollow shell that spoke of nothing but despair.
He stared blankly into the distance, as if searching for answers in the void, before turning back to Marilyn. “Marilyn, I will marry you. But we must agree to three conditions. Before we proceed with the marriage registration, we will draft an agreement: you will cease to slander or falsely accuse Adeline. After the marriage, we will not cohabitate. I will send you abroad and provide you with a living allowance of three million a month. If you accept these terms, we will go ahead and register the marriage.”
The thought of being sent away after their marriage pierced through Marilyn like a cold knife. She had envisioned a life where they would cultivate love together, perhaps even welcome another child. The idea of living apart was a bitter pill to swallow.
Yet, the most pressing matter was securing that marriage certificate—becoming his wife, shielded by the law. Once she bore the title of Mrs. Luke, and with the potential of carrying the Luke heir, she felt confident that he could not simply send her away if she chose to return.
He was already offering her a staggering sum while harboring disdain for her. Just imagine, once she captured his heart, the wealth she could command!
Suppressing the exhilaration bubbling within her, she feigned compliance, her voice steady. “Yes, I agree to everything you’ve outlined. Victor, today is a weekday. Shall we go register our marriage now?”
“Mmm.” His response was curt, devoid of warmth or enthusiasm.
Victor was acutely aware that his family would never approve of his union with Marilyn. Yet, fate had played a hand; the government had recently enacted a new regulation that allowed marriage registration with just an ID card. His identification was conveniently tucked away in his wallet.
Since this was a path he could not avoid, he resolved to confront it head-on. Without wasting another moment, Victor set his mind on registering their marriage without delay.
…
Meanwhile, Grace had a sudden impulse to learn how to sew. Lily, who possessed the skill, had graciously agreed to instruct her that day. After they finished breakfast, James drove Lily back to the Luke family manor.
As James and Lily entered the room, Grace rushed toward them, her anxiety palpable. “James, hurry! Go check Victor’s room! Hide his ID card! I don’t want a troublesome, home-wrecking granddaughter-in-law!”
The Luke family had always respected each other’s privacy. Typically, even as Victor’s older brother, James wouldn’t dare to intrude into his personal space. However, sensing Grace’s mounting distress, he recognized the gravity of the situation. He couldn’t allow Victor to tie himself to a woman like Marilyn, so he dashed upstairs without a moment’s hesitation.
“James, I’m coming with you,” Lily said, equally worried that Victor might find himself ensnared by Marilyn’s grasp. She hurried after him, determined to help.
Victor’s bedroom door stood slightly ajar, inviting them in. They made their way to his desk, where they began their search. The drawers were unlocked, and James rifled through them with a sense of urgency, but his ID card was nowhere to be found.
Lily, too, came up empty-handed, but beneath a file on the desk, she spotted a familiar lucky charm. Recognition washed over her; it was the very charm she had given to Adeline during their childhood.
“Lily, what is it?” James asked, noticing her intense focus on Victor’s desk, her expression clouded with concern.
She picked up the charm, her fingers brushing against its surface. “This is the lucky charm I gave Adeline. Why is it on Victor’s desk?”
