As Lily’s words hung in the air, James’s gaze shifted to the lucky charm resting on the table. A frown creased his forehead as he questioned, “Are you absolutely certain you didn’t confuse it with something else?”
His instincts told him that Adeline held a profound affection for Lily, a bond that ran deep. It seemed implausible for Adeline to gift Victor a charm crafted by Lily, especially since there was no significant connection between Adeline and Victor. The thought gnawed at him, stirring a whirlpool of confusion.
Lily, with a gentle shake of her head, responded with conviction, “I can’t be mistaken! I crafted this charm with my own hands. The pattern is etched in my memory. Plus, I inscribed a few small words on the inside: ‘May all your wishes come true.'”
As James slowly turned the wooden charm in his hands, the faint etching of the words became visible. A wave of bewilderment washed over him.
How on earth did Adeline’s treasured charm find its way into Victor’s possession? Did Victor stumble upon it by mere chance, or did Adeline willingly part with it? The questions danced in his mind, each one more perplexing than the last. What was the true nature of the relationship between Victor and Adeline?
…
The day outside was bright and promising, yet the courthouse was eerily quiet. With the marriage rate dwindling, there were only a handful of couples waiting to register their vows. As Victor and Marilyn stepped inside, they noticed a solitary young couple ahead of them, their spirits high with anticipation.
Marilyn, her impatience bubbling over, was desperate to secure their marriage certificate. As she watched the staff diligently preparing to assist the couple in front, a surge of entitlement surged through her. Without a second thought, she rudely shoved the girl aside, her voice dripping with arrogance, “Do ours first!”
The girl, taken aback, shot back, “Are you out of your mind? This is supposed to be a joyful occasion! Can’t you wait your turn? You have no manners at all!”
Marilyn’s temper flared at the perceived insult. “Who are you calling mannerless?” she snapped, her voice rising in pitch. “Do you even know who I am?”
“I am Victor’s future wife! The daughter-in-law of the wealthiest man, Blanc. If you offend me, you’re crossing the entire Luke family! My husband won’t let this slide!”
At the mention of Blanc’s name, the couple’s expressions shifted, a flicker of unease passing between them. They had no pressing urgency; a few more moments of waiting wouldn’t hurt.
Yet, Marilyn’s brazen arrogance was infuriating. The couple felt their resolve strengthen. After all, they were in the right. “Our number was called first! Even if the richest man himself showed up to register, he would have to wait in line. Your number hasn’t even been called yet. Why should you go first?”

Marilyn’s eyes brimmed with tears. She had envisioned Victor standing up for her, teaching those disrespectful individuals a lesson, not reprimanding her in front of everyone. Here she was, the daughter-in-law of the wealthiest family, expecting special treatment, yet instead, she faced public humiliation.
Just as she contemplated how to twist the situation to her favor, Victor’s phone rang, interrupting her thoughts.
The sound of the ringing phone sent a jolt of unease through her. She raised her chin defiantly and hissed, “Victor, that’s my cousin calling, isn’t it? She’s pregnant by some other man, yet she keeps pestering you! How can she be so shameless?”
“Marilyn!” Victor’s voice turned cold, his expression hardening. “Mind your words!”
Ignoring her completely, he glanced at the caller ID and saw it was James. He stepped outside to take the call, leaving Marilyn seething in frustration.
Marilyn could sense the couple’s satisfaction at her outburst. “What are you looking at? You pathetic commoners! Just wait!” she spat, her glare fixed on the girl as she hurried after Victor.
“James…” Victor anticipated the familiar voice of his friend, but instead, he heard Lily’s anxious tone.
“Victor, Grandma was worried you might secretly marry Marilyn, so she sent James and me to your room to find your ID card. On your desk, I discovered a lucky charm made of sandalwood. On the front, there’s a soaring phoenix and the small word ‘Peace, Fortune.’ Inside, it says ‘May all your wishes come true.’ That charm belongs to Adeline. Why is it in your room?”
“What?”
