Nora stared at Aaron.
Aaron’s face was deathly pale.
The onlookers were initially confused, but after hearing the explanation, they understood. They now looked at Aaron with contempt.
“Seriously? This guy is really good at taking credit for things he didn’t do.”
“She was admitted and paid for her treatment normally. How is that ‘using his connections’? What kind of connection is that? I thought he meant he got her free treatment or bumped someone else for a bed or an organ transplant. How is this pulling strings?”
“The audacity of this guy!”
The tables had turned. Aaron’s lips trembled. Seeing that he couldn’t pin this on Nora, he changed his tack.
“But I did help treat your mother for years. Even if there was no great contribution, there was hard work…”
It would have been better if he hadn’t mentioned it. The moment he did, Nora was seething.
Remembering what Aaron and Mia had said in the parking garage, each of Nora’s words hit Aaron’s face like shards of ice. “Aaron, did you really treat my mother with all your heart?”
Aaron was stunned.
For a split second, he suspected his and Mia’s plan had been exposed.
But then he thought, Nora hadn’t discovered anything for so long, so how could it be exposed now?
Besides, with Nora’s temper, if she really knew what he and Mia had done, how could she be so quiet?
Her mother was her weakness. If Nora knew someone was trying to harm her mother, she would have raised hell, just like she did at the hospital before.
At this thought, Aaron quickly calmed down.
“Nora, did you hear some rumor and misunderstand me? How could I not have put my heart into treating your mother?”
