“Are you looking for your boyfriend?”

The young girl’s clear voice held a hint of playful teasing. Even though Nora was mostly immune to the word “boyfriend” by now, she couldn’t stop her ears from turning red.

She turned to see a young girl, not much older than a teen, getting an IV drip.

She was very thin, with barely any meat on her bones.

But her complexion was rosy, and her eyes were bright and clear, like translucent glass beads.

“Do you know where he went?”

Nora didn’t bother explaining her relationship with Nathan again.

There was no point in getting into a serious discussion about it with a young girl.

“I do.”

The girl pointed to Nora’s IV bag. “When that big guy left, he asked me to keep an eye on this for him. As a thank you, he said he’d bring me breakfast, and I said yes!”

The girl’s smile was infectious, and Nora couldn’t help but curve her lips into a small smile. “Is that so? Thank you.”

The girl shook her head, her sparse braids swinging. “No need to thank me.”

“I got something out of it, too.”

Nora found the girl interesting and glanced at the name on her IV bag.

Tessa Dalton?

The name seemed a bit familiar.

As Nora was trying to recall where she’d heard it, she caught sight of a tall but slender man walking over, his face etched with exhaustion.

“Jacob!”

The young girl’s eyes lit up with surprise when she saw the man.

“You came to see me! I thought you weren’t coming today.”

Hearing the familiar name, Nora’s gaze fell on the man with a complicated expression.

At the same time, she finally remembered who Tessa was.

The father of the criminal suspect, Jacob, had taken in two young girls from his extended family. One of them was Tessa.

The dark circles under his eyes were prominent, a clear sign that he hadn’t been resting properly.

“I’m much better.”

Tessa looked at Jacob, her heart aching for him. “You didn’t sleep again last night, did you?”

Jacob smiled and patted Tessa’s head. “What’s a little girl like you worrying about that for?”

Tessa stubbornly stuck her chin out and looked at him. “Why can’t I worry? Your dad said we’re a family.”

“Jacob, you can’t go on like this. I should just stop my treatment and go back with you.”

Jacob’s face immediately darkened.

“Haven’t I told you not to say things like that again?”

Tessa flinched and shrank back.

Her delicate lips trembled a few times before she spoke as if she had made up her mind. “But your dad’s illness is already serious and costs a lot of money. Now with me like this, I can’t even help take care of him.”

“Jacob, my illness isn’t serious. I can go back and take turns with you caring for him. Let’s focus on getting him better first, okay?”
