The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 198

“Later, I had your DNA compared with your sister's, which confirmed that the victim in the fire was related to you.”

Tessa stared with wide eyes.

She was still young and had grown up in the countryside; she was still at an age where she was learning about everything.

So, what Nora was saying was all completely over her head.

Nora didn't delve further into the technical details, giving Tessa time to process.

“My sister was burned to death... so does that mean there's no killer in this case?”

Tessa asked softly, holding on to a faint glimmer of hope.

Nora shook her head. “There is a killer.”

Tessa began to tremble.

Clearly, the clever girl had already guessed something but couldn't bring herself to believe it.

“Dr. Hayes.”

A knock came at the door of the meeting room. Nora answered, then said to the girl, “Just sit here for a moment,” before getting up and stepping out.

“How's it going?”

The officer who had come to find her shook his head. “Kyle has confessed, but Jacob is stubbornly refusing to change his story.”

“He keeps saying he's the one who did it, but all the evidence shows he has little to do with the case.”

The officer looked troubled. “He's a college student with a bright future. Why does he have to get involved in this?”

“Even if they're his family, there's no need for all of them to go down for it.”

Nora lowered her gaze. “What does Nathan say?”

“Nathan said you should persuade the girl to see Jacob.”

Nora considered this for a moment before nodding. “I understand.”

“I'll head back then.”

“Kyle knocked Zoe unconscious, put her in the trunk, and after torturing and killing her, dumped her body in a trash heap.”

Tessa flinched.

“He… he's so cruel.”

Nora stared at Tessa intently.

“Yes, very cruel.”

Tessa hugged herself. “Why… why is fate so cruel to us?”

“Just because I got sick, how could our whole family be destroyed?”

Nora watched Tessa anxiously pick at her fingers and sighed softly. “Do you want to see Jacob? You're the sister he cares about most. Maybe you can talk some sense into him. Jacob has little to do with this case. He still has a bright future and his whole life ahead of him. If he insists on confessing and taking the blame, his life will be over.”

Tessa took a deep breath and stood up without hesitation. “I'll see him.”

“I'll convince Jacob not to do something foolish.”
