The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 197

With a confession, the case progressed quickly.

The next morning, Tessa was summoned to the police station.

Nora was assigned to meet with the resilient young girl.

She seemed to have guessed why, arriving with red-rimmed eyes.

Her eyes lit up when she saw Nora, but the light quickly faded.

“Hello, miss.”

Tessa still had a small bandage on the back of her hand, as if she'd just had an IV removed.

Nora invited her to sit and poured her a glass of water.

“How is your condition?”

Tessa's eyes were vacant. “Jacob said it can be treated.”

“He said we'll soon get back the money the Robert family took from us, and then I can get proper treatment.”

Nora first said, “That's wonderful. Congratulations.”

After a pause, she spoke carefully, “Tessa, would you mind telling me your family's story?”

Tessa looked at Nora, seemingly weighing her options or perhaps just not knowing where to begin.

Nora didn't press her, waiting quietly.

After about half an hour, Tessa finally spoke. “Actually, our family was doing well.”

She emphasized softly, “We didn't have money, but we were very happy.”

“Jacob's father, the people in the village called him Philip Carter. I heard he saved a lot of people during a flood years ago, so everyone in the village respected him.”

“Everyone also admired him—for his tireless hard work, day in and day out, and for his kindness and selfless dedication.”

“When my sister and I were taken in, Philip was already supporting several people with his own two hands.”
