The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 201

Fiona Dalton's face rapidly drained of color. She tugged at her lips, trying to offer Nora a smile, but the result was a grimace more painful than tears.

"Were you testing me this whole time, Nora?"

Nora shook her head. "It wasn't a test. Just doing my job."

"Where did I slip up?"

"The liver disease." Nora answered readily, a final act of mercy for the girl.

"Liver disease?" Fiona's eyes were filled with confusion.

Nora explained it in simple terms. "It's true that tissue remains after a body is burned, but my claim about finding liver disease in the deceased was a bluff. The body was too severely charred. Even extracting a viable DNA sample would be a miracle, let alone diagnosing a chronic liver condition. The truth is, both you and your sister suffered from chronic liver disease, but yours was much more severe. When you heard me mention it, you visibly relaxed. We checked your sister's medical records. Your condition kept fluctuating because you were taking her medication, which wasn't prescribed for your specific needs."

Fiona let out a self-deprecating laugh. "Tessa always told me to study harder. I scoffed at her. Jacob Carter studied hard, and what good did it do?"

Nora glanced at Nathan Peyton and the other officers emerging from the precinct. "Let's talk inside."

Fiona lowered her head. After a long silence, she voluntarily held out her hands.

Click.

Tears finally spilled from Fiona's eyes.

...

Jacob Carter wasn't pleased to see Fiona arrested. When an officer informed him he was free to go, he practically glued himself to the chair, refusing to leave.
