Nora hesitated for a fraction of a second before slipping her hand into the crook of Nathan's arm.
Aaron had been waiting outside the station for half an hour. He had almost given up hope of seeing her today when he looked up and saw Nora and Nathan strolling out the main doors, looking like a ridiculously stunning power couple.
Aaron's eyes instantly flared red. "Nora!"
He charged forward, flowers in hand, physically blocking their path.
"Are you really going to marry him, Nora?"
Aaron hadn't expected the news of Nora's impending marriage to sting this much. But ever since the gala, his nights had been plagued by nightmares. He kept dreaming of their college days, of the time a group of thugs cornered him in a back alley. Nora had walked right into the chaos, calm and calculated, and chased them off. When the thugs later tried to retaliate against her, she hadn't panicked. She methodically gathered evidence and sent them all to jail.
To a younger Aaron, Nora had been a superhero. Everyone on campus had called the stunning pre-med student a flawless ice queen, untouchable and cold. But Aaron's heart had pounded wildly for her because he believed he was the only one who saw the fierce, burning fire beneath the ice.
That incident sparked his relentless pursuit of her. Years later, he had tried to playfully ask why she saved him. She had looked at him blankly and admitted she had forgotten his face entirely. At the time, Aaron had been overwhelmingly moved. He was endlessly proud to have secured such a purely righteous, brave girlfriend, swearing to protect and love her forever.
But as time dragged on, his heart strayed. The memories faded, and the magic wore off.
Until the day in the interrogation room, when Nora stepped in front of him to defend him against false accusations. Even though Nathan Peyton was standing right beside her. Even though she didn't spare Aaron a single glance.
In that fleeting moment, Aaron realized with agonizing clarity that the heart he thought had gone cold for Nora was beating out of control once again.
