The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 207

And coming out of Nathan's mouth, it was completely surreal.

To Nora, Nathan had always radiated a cool, composed, and unshakeably reliable aura. He was the perfect, textbook definition of a stoic police captain. He carried himself with an innate, quiet nobility. If he traded his tactical gear for a tailored suit, he could easily pass for a billionaire CEO stepping out of a boardroom.

Who would have thought a man like him would casually drop street-level trash talk just to humiliate Aaron?

"The internet," Nathan said calmly, starting the engine. "Did you think I was too harsh? Are you feeling sorry for him?"

Nora rolled her eyes. "Why would I feel sorry for him? I was worried about your professional image."

Nathan's hands tightened imperceptibly on the steering wheel. A flicker of deep, hidden joy flared in his dark eyes.

"Worried about me?" he murmured. "Really?"

Nora turned to look at him and caught the undeniable spark of anticipation in his gaze. Flustered, she quickly coughed and faced the windshield. "I just mean... you don't have to step up for me like that. I can handle my own messes."

She preferred him as the cool, collected captain. His sudden overprotectiveness made her feel completely out of her depth.

"Your business is my business," Nathan replied smoothly.

Nora felt a strange, sudden jolt in her chest. "What?"

"I told you already," Nathan said, his tone entirely reasonable. "I brought you onto the task force. Naturally, it's my responsibility to look after you."

Nora frowned. "But Aaron is personal baggage."

If the captain of a homicide task force had to manage the personal relationship drama of every team member, he'd be dead from exhaustion.

"So what if it's personal?" Nathan countered. "If he keeps harassing you, it ruins your mood."

"A bad mood ruins your sleep."
