"Dad, you know how long I've been preparing for this charity gala! How could you just leave me behind?" Mia deployed her ultimate weapon, crying beautifully as she grabbed Leonard's arm. "Please, Dad. I really just wanted to see the Devereaux estate and gain some experience. Let me come with you, please?"
Men were always weak against this tactic, and Leonard was no exception.
Seeing the daughter he had doted on for years crying so pitifully, he couldn't bring himself to force her back into her car.
"Fine, follow us. But you are absolutely not to cause any trouble! I'm here to negotiate a critical partnership with the Devereaux Group. If you mess this up, I'll have your mother ship you out of the country by morning!"
Mia nodded sweetly, but the second Leonard turned around, she shot a venomous glare at Nora, who had just sat quietly in the car the entire time.
If Leonard was personally escorting Nora, he must think she was useful. Was he planning to marry Nora into the Devereaux family?
The more Mia thought about it, the more convinced she became. Jealousy and panic gnawed at her. The Devereaux family was royalty in Luminport City; even Leonard had to bow to them. Had her father lost his mind? Why would he offer Nora such a lucrative marriage instead of her?
Mia smirked to herself. Thank God she had crashed the trip. She wasn't about to let Nora hit the jackpot tonight.
Pulling out her phone, Mia quickly typed out a message to Aaron Wells. If Nora was trying to climb the social ladder, Mia would personally saw off every rung. She was going to make sure Nora was ruined forever.
...
Mia's flashy sports car tailed Leonard's luxury sedan. Both vehicles screamed wealth, drawing stares as they cruised down the avenue.
Nora pulled her gaze away from the passing traffic, looking bored as she pulled out her phone. She drafted a text to Nathan, wanting to ask if he was still coming to the gala.
Beside her, Leonard tried to smooth things over with a strained, placating tone. "Nora, your sister is just a little impatient, but she's not a bad person.
As a prominent business figure, Leonard's arrival immediately drew the attention of the surrounding socialites and reporters.
Terrified of being overshadowed, Mia practically sprinted out of her car, shoved her way to Leonard's side, and hooked her arm through his. She put on a look of dramatic shock, loudly gasping as she pointed at Nora.
"Oh my God, isn't this Dr. Hayes, the medical examiner?"
Mia's voice carried clearly across the entryway. "I can't believe you'd come to a party like this! When I first saw you, my heart totally skipped a beat. I mean, since you dissect dead bodies for a living, having you show up just feels like a terrible omen."
The moment Mia's words dropped, the surrounding guests turned toward Nora, their eyes filling with immediate disgust.
Someone in the crowd muttered loudly, "A forensic pathologist at a charity auction? What, are they auctioning off corpses tonight? Who invited someone so morbid?"
