This wasn't the first time Nora had faced this kind of prejudice.
Even though forensic pathology was a highly respected field, society often treated medical examiners the same way they treated morticians. Because their daily lives revolved around the dead, wealthy circles viewed them as morbid outsiders.
The crowd stared at Nora as if she weren't a human being, but some sort of grotesque anomaly.
Almost instantly, the guests took several large steps back, leaving Nora isolated in the center of a wide, empty circle. They eyed her like she was a walking contagion, terrified of catching whatever bad luck or filth she might be carrying.
Mia watched the scene unfold with malicious satisfaction.
She knew her father's true nature better than anyone: he was fiercely selfish and obsessed with his public image. If Leonard had introduced Nora as his daughter first, the crowd would have maintained their polite facade out of respect for the Hayes Group, no matter how they truly felt about her profession.
But by striking first and exposing Nora's job, Mia had cornered him. Leonard would never publicly claim Nora now and risk embarrassing himself in front of Luminport's elite. Nora was entirely on her own.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, Dr. Hayes! Should I not have mentioned your job out loud? Everyone looks a little creeped out by you," Mia said, her fake innocence painfully transparent. Her acting was terrible enough to win an award.
Having absolutely zero self-awareness, she continued her sickly-sweet performance. "But I am super curious... With your background, whose invitation did you use to get in? I don't mean to be rude! It's just... you don't really fit in here."
Nora lifted her chin and locked eyes with Leonard.
Even though she knew her father lacked any real spine, she had literally arrived in his car. Plenty of people at the entrance had seen them pull up together. Even if he didn't want to officially claim her as his daughter right now, he could have easily smoothed things over with a generic excuse.
