The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 241

"Keep it down."

Nathan Peyton's voice was remarkably steady, completely devoid of emotion.

Startled, the married couple fell silent in an instant.

Nora Hayes narrowed her eyes. Something about their behavior felt entirely incongruous with their supposed social standing.

Her suspicions were quickly confirmed.

"We... we really are Rosalind's biological parents," Mr. Lowe stammered. "But the 'Ship King' is my brother. Rosalind grew up by his side. She was spoiled rotten and did whatever she pleased. We couldn't control her."

Nathan arched a brow. "Where were you at the time of the incident? And why didn't you show up when we asked you to come in for a statement?"

Nora realized that the couple had completely ignored the police station's initial calls. They hadn't rushed to the scene when their daughter died, but they somehow found the time to cause a scene at the precinct doors. What an eye-opening display of parenting.

"We thought..." Mr. and Mrs. Lowe exchanged a look, their faces flushed with embarrassment. "Rosalind used to throw temper tantrums and threaten to kill herself all the time. We figured she was just acting out again. Mr. Peyton, these questions have nothing to do with her death, right? What are you getting at?"

Unmoved, Nathan continued, "Did your daughter have any enemies? Who was she close with?"

A blank look washed over their faces.

"Final question," Nathan said. "Why did you come down here to cause a scene?"

Unable to stay quiet any longer, Mr. Lowe mumbled, "We heard a rumor. When the police called to say Rosalind was dead, we didn't take it seriously. But then someone told me she had assaulted someone, and that person killed her out of revenge. That's when I realized it was serious and rushed over with my people. I didn't expect..."

Identical expressions of awkward guilt painted both their faces.
