Nora was speechless.

How did he move so fast?

Who knew what kind of conclusions the task force would jump to now.

"Nora."

As her thoughts spun, the man's deep voice resonated above her.

She reflexively looked up, meeting his eyes from just inches away.

He rested one hand against the wall, trapping her between the headboard and his broad chest.

The proximity was dangerously intimate.

Nora's breathing hitched, and her first instinct was to slide down and hide under the covers.

But he immediately caught onto her plan, his hand gently gripping her chin to force her to maintain eye contact.

Her heart skipped a beat the moment their eyes locked.

His gaze was overwhelmingly intense.

Nora felt like she was being pulled into a dark, magnetic vortex, losing all control over her own body.

"Why didn't you text me?"

Nathan finally spoke.

A loud buzzing filled Nora's head, like the deep toll of a bell right next to her ear.

"W-what?"

Seeing her bewildered expression, Nathan let out an exasperated chuckle. "I asked why you didn't message me when it happened."

"You clearly knew something was wrong. Why did you fall for their trap and let yourself be taken?"

Only then did Nora realize he was talking about the kidnapping at her apartment complex.

Thinking back to the incident, she pressed her lips together.

"I'm sorry."

A muscle in Nathan's jaw ticked.

She had sensed something was off yet walked right out. It wasn't until the sharp pain in her neck at the complex gates that she realized she had miscalculated entirely.

After waking up, she hadn't had the luxury of wallowing in regret; she had been too focused on observing her surroundings to maximize her chances of survival.

Thankfully, it hadn't ended in total disaster, and both she and Nolan had been rescued safely.

"You're right, it was my fault," Nora admitted, biting her lower lip. Her dark lashes fluttered, radiating a fragile, heartbreaking beauty. "I'll submit a full report acknowledging my mistakes. I won't run from the responsibility."

"Is that all?"

Nathan's voice was completely unreadable.

Closing her eyes, she fought back the tears threatening to spill. "Yeah..."

A soft scoff came from above her.

A tear escaped, only to be brushed away as gently as a feather, before she was pulled into a tight, warm embrace.

"Aren't you going to apologize to me?"

"You terrified me, Nora."
