Nora froze.
She had imagined a thousand reasons for his call, but this hadn't been one of them.
"I'm perfectly fine..."
Harold Peyton refused to listen. "You're sitting in a hospital bed and telling me you're fine?"
"I'm pulling up to the inpatient building right now. Give me your room number, and we'll talk when I get there."
Nora opened her mouth to decline, but realizing he was already there, she had no choice but to give him the number.
"Wait right there. I'll be up in five minutes."
With that, he hung up.
Nora sat there in a daze.
Ever since her mother fell ill, she had hidden every minor sickness or injury from her.
Always fiercely independent, Nora had forged herself into an unbreakable iron wall.
Now, finding herself hospitalized and being fussed over by an elderly man she barely knew, a bittersweet lump formed in her throat.
But then a far more serious realization hit her—
What about Nathan?
He had practically just confessed his feelings for her. What if he slipped up in front of Grandpa Peyton?
Even though she had no intention of accepting Nathan's advances, the old man would definitely be upset if he saw them together.
He had been nothing but kind to her, and she had no desire to break his heart.
She started to call out for Nathan but stopped, terrified someone else might hear.
Ultimately, she grabbed her phone and shot him a text.
[I have a visitor. Head straight back to the station after your call. I'm fine here!]
Fearful he might ignore her, she added another line for good measure: [Go back ASAP. The case is more important!]
She clutched her phone, waiting anxiously. Before Nathan could reply, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed outside.
