The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 291

"Looks like we can confirm it," Nathan said softly. "We canvassed the scene and confirmed that Liam Jennings wasn't actually inside Evelyn's apartment for most of the night."

Nora paused.

"So you're saying more than half of Liam's statement was a complete lie."

Nathan sat down next to Nora. "Not necessarily."

Nora frowned.

Seeing her reaction, Nathan let out a low chuckle.

"So impatient?"

Nora shot him a glare.

"I'm thinking."

She was starting to realize that ever since they had laid their cards on the table, this man had completely stopped hiding his true colors around her.

Whenever he got the chance, he just had to show off his cunning, teasing nature.

"Alright, then think hard."

Nathan rested his chin on his hand, his gaze landing softly on Nora.

Flustered by his intense stare, Nora lowered her eyes. "What are you looking at?"

"Looking at how beautiful you are."

Nora was speechless.

She lifted her gaze and stared at him for a long moment.

Suddenly, Nora leaned in, grabbed both of Nathan's cheeks, and gave them a firm pull outward.

His incredibly handsome face instantly puffed up into a round, squishy shape.

The smile on his lips was stretched by her hands, making him look rather comical.

Seeing that he was still smiling even while his face was being squished, Nora felt entirely exasperated.

"What are you smiling about?"

He looked no different from a total fool in love.

Although Nora felt a burst of sweetness in her chest, she was mostly just unaccustomed to it.

Something flashed through her mind, but it vanished too quickly for her to grasp.

"According to our neighborhood canvas, Liam usually keeps to himself and rarely interacts with anyone."

"He and Evelyn had a volatile, on-and-off relationship. Rumor has it they've been dragging each other down for years."

"So, does that dog-walking neighbor from his statement actually exist?"

"Yes, and that guy is actually pretty good friends with Liam."

"Liam used to have a large Malamute, but the dog ran away during one of his explosive fights with Evelyn and hasn't been seen since."

"That's strange," Nora said, deeply confused. "In his statement, Liam painted them as this incredibly loving... couple."

"And according to his own words, he's supposed to be an upbeat, optimistic guy."

"But what your investigation uncovered paints a completely different picture from what he claimed."

The reason it wasn't an absolute lie was that there were indeed grains of truth mixed in.

"And that," Nathan said smoothly, "might just be the key to our investigation."
