The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 292

"Yeah."

Nora checked the time. "When is the autopsy?"

As a medical examiner, Nora was much more accustomed to—and skilled at—finding evidence directly on the body.

After all, people lied, but corpses didn't.

"We might not be able to do that right now."

Nathan rubbed his temples, his voice low. "We still haven't been able to reach Evelyn's family, and Liam's legal status means he can't sign the consent forms."

Nora fell silent.

Even though the police could bypass family consent for an autopsy if the cause of death was unknown and clearly indicated a homicide.

Evelyn's current cause of death appeared perfectly straightforward.

According to the first responding officers and Liam's eyewitness account:

The crime scene was immaculately preserved; the deceased was lying face up on the floor with a massive bloody wound on the back of her head.

Beside her lay a sharp object that appeared to be the base of a trophy.

It was completely stained crimson with blood.

The working theory was that Evelyn had been heavily intoxicated. She had likely gotten up, lost her balance in her drunken state, and hit her head squarely on the heavy base.

Liam had claimed he returned from taking out the trash, found Evelyn bleeding out on the floor, and immediately called the police.

"Wait a minute," Nora said, suddenly recalling something. "When the precinct called me, they specifically said Evelyn had been murdered."

If the scene suggested she accidentally fell and hit her head, why would the officers frame it like that?

"Because Liam was absolutely adamant that Evelyn was murdered."

"And later, the police did uncover some highly unusual discrepancies."

"Like what?"

Nora had felt something was off about this case from the start.

She just couldn't put her finger on it yet.

"According to the neighbors above and below them, there were sounds of a vicious argument coming from Evelyn's apartment."
