Nathan never seemed like the type to abuse his authority for personal reasons, so Nora genuinely thought he wanted to discuss the case.
To her surprise, Nathan didn't even try to hide his intentions. "I'm taking you home."
Nora gave him a blank look.
"Right now?"
Nathan gave a firm nod.
He had already grabbed his car keys.
Nora stared at him with a complicated expression, finally realizing her understanding of this man was far from complete.
"You need to rest."
"Without the autopsy, you're just torturing yourself waiting around the precinct," Nathan said smoothly. "You're better off going home to catch up on sleep. I promise to notify you the second we get any news. Deal?"
By the end of his sentence, he was practically coaxing her like a child.
Nora nodded in defeat.
"Fine."
She did have other pressing matters to attend to anyway.
Mia Hayes had rushed her several times to finalize the property transfer.
Once the house was legally back in her name, she needed to inspect its condition.
It was, after all, the only memento her grandparents had left her mother.
Even though her mother never brought it up over the years.
Nora knew deep down her mother carried immense guilt over losing it.
Although Nora had built a decent nest egg since becoming a medical examiner, buying back the property would have been near impossible.
And it wasn't even about the money.
Her father, Leonard Hayes, had repurchased the house years ago, only to foolishly hand the deed over to Mia's mother out of blind infatuation.
Mia's mother had then rented it out for free to her own relatives.
Given the sheer hatred Mia's mother harbored for Nora and her mom, she would have bulldozed the place rather than let Nora buy it back.
Nora had no idea how Mia managed to pry the deed from her mother's hands, but as long as she got it back, nothing else mattered.
Since Miss Mia had plotted to harm Nora's mother, paying this price was entirely justified.
The two walked out of the precinct side by side.
After settling into the car, Nathan asked Nora about her plans for the day.
Nora mentioned the property transfer for her mother's house.
