"Preconceived notions?"
Nora paused, a flicker of genuine confusion cutting through her frustration.
"What do you mean?"
Nathan kept his eyes on the road. "Because you read about that web novel predicting the murder during dinner, the second the case dropped, your subconscious inextricably linked the fiction to reality."
"You built your entire foundation on trying to connect the two. Obviously, finding a logical bridge between reality and a fictional prophecy is impossible."
"And during that struggle, you slowly convinced yourself that this case was bizarre, illogical, and impossibly complex."
"So, the harder you looked, the more the discrepancies tangled together, until you felt like you were staring at a giant knot of yarn with no end in sight."
"Yes!" Nora jolted upright in her seat, her eyes shining brilliantly as she stared at Nathan. "That is exactly how it feels!"
"It's like wandering into a fog-filled labyrinth. Something about the path feels eerily familiar, but in reality, I've never walked it. The entire maze is totally alien to me."
"The truth is," Nathan said smoothly, "once you completely discard the framing of an internet novel predicting a murder, you'll realize this case is incredibly simple."
The excitement wiped right off Nora's face.
"Don't tell me you already know who the killer is."
You really couldn't blame Nora for looking like her reality was shattering.
Nathan was just operating on a terrifyingly high frequency!
The rest of the department was running around like headless chickens, and he was casually dropping lines like 'this case is incredibly simple' without batting an eye.
Nora couldn't fathom it. She had practically been joined at the hip with him this entire time. How was she drawing a complete blank while he had casually zeroed in on the true culprit?
"I don't know."
Four crisp, distinct words slipped from his lips.
Nora leveled him with a look that screamed, *Do I look like an idiot to you?*
Nathan laughed, thoroughly entertained by her glare.
"Nora, while I'm incredibly flattered that you hold me in such high regard..."
"I genuinely don't have a definitive name for the killer yet."
