The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 340

"Even after everything, you're still concerned about her."

A flicker of panic shattered Laura's composure.

"I'm just... I'm just in shock."

Laura forced every word out with deliberate care. "She was just beating me, terrorizing me... and then she just drops dead? It's terrifying, isn't it? It's completely unnatural."

"Just thinking about it makes my blood run cold."

"Especially since she physically moved me into a different car today."

The officer noticed the visceral goosebumps erupting across Laura's arms and gently rubbed her shoulders, trying to ground her from the panic attack.

"We're running down every lead. It's entirely possible the woman who moved you wasn't even Evelyn."

"It was her!"

Laura violently latched onto the officer's arm, her eyes locking with a sudden, manic resolve. "Can you take me to the precinct? I... I have something I need to confess!"

The officer stared into Laura's dilated, frantic pupils. Seeing that the woman was teetering on the edge of a psychological cliff, she didn't hesitate. She nodded. "Alright."

"Let's get you in a cruiser right now."

Laura clung to the officer like a lifeline, completely terrified that letting go would spell her doom.

Assuming the poor woman was just suffering from acute PTSD compounded by the horrific news of her kidnapper's murder, the officer let her cling. She flagged down her squad mates, and they loaded into the cruiser, tearing off toward the precinct.

At the exact same moment, Nora pushed through the doors of the Forensics Division's surveillance room.

"Talk to me."

Julia had preemptively cued up the tape. Seeing Nora, she burst into a frantic, guilt-ridden explanation. "We caught them on camera, but the footage is useless."

"It's entirely my fault," Julia groaned, burying her face in her hands. "I wasn't paying attention. Someone walked right into the lab, and I didn't even verify their credentials. She literally stole the body right out from under my nose."

Nora leaned over the monitors, her eyes narrowing at the screen. The suspect was dressed in a standard janitorial uniform. They wheeled a large utility cart into the autopsy suite. When they exited, their posture had fundamentally changed—the strain in their shoulders was obvious. The cart was significantly heavier.

Evelyn's corpse was undoubtedly stuffed inside.

"That is a massive protocol breach," Nora said, her voice dropping into a lethal, authoritative register.
