Evelyn's death had completely devastated Laura. She had racked her brain but simply could not comprehend how their desperate plan had ended in a real murder.
Nora furrowed her brows. As the video ended, she sat frozen in her chair, tuning out the buzzing discussions filling the room.
"Based on our investigation, Laura Morgan's testimony is completely accurate," an officer announced at the front. "The kidnapping was deliberately staged."
He pulled up several time-stamped surveillance screenshots on the projector.
"Laura and Evelyn intentionally lingered in areas with heavy camera coverage. Furthermore, when Evelyn got out of the car, despite her obvious efforts to act natural, she couldn't resist shooting a glance directly at the security camera."
Nora's gaze locked onto the screen. But while the rest of the room analyzed the timestamps, her eyes were zeroed in on Evelyn's hand in the photograph.
"Do we have the video for this?" Nora asked abruptly.
The officer blinked, unsure of what the medical examiner was looking for, but nodded. "Yes. Would you like me to play it, Dr. Hayes?"
"Please."
"Alright."
The video rolled. A car pulled into a temporary parking spot outside a convenience store. The driver's side door cracked open, and a hand emerged first. The driver's thumb noticeably stroked the edge of the door frame before she pushed it shut.
"Next clip," Nora ordered.
Confused, the officer glanced at Nathan out of habit. Nathan gave a curt nod, and the officer immediately queued up the next file.
It was another clip of Evelyn stopping to buy supplies. Just like before, as she stepped out, her thumb absentmindedly caressed the metal of the door.
"Next."
