Nora glanced at Nathan, surprised that he had completely called it.
"Yes, I am."
She answered politely, "My time off hasn't ended yet."
Harold sounded even more delighted. "Perfect! Bring that rascal home with you tomorrow."
"I didn't want to overstep before when he was keeping his identity a secret from you, but now that everything is out in the open, we should all sit down for a meal. We're going to be family anyway, so it's best to get comfortable with each other."
Nora hadn't navigated family dynamics like this before, and she suddenly felt completely out of her depth. "Tomorrow?"
"Yes, tomorrow."
"There are still a lot of details to sort out for the wedding. It's a once-in-a-lifetime event, so you and that boy need to pay a little attention to it."
"We still have time before the big day, so it's a perfect chance for you two to discuss it. If you have any new ideas, let me know, and we can still make changes."
Nora was about to say she didn't have any specific demands for the wedding, but Nathan spoke up first.
"We'll head over tomorrow morning."
Harold clearly hadn't expected his grandson to be listening in.
He paused for a second before laughing agreeably. "That's wonderful! I'll have the chef start prepping. Does Nora have any dietary restrictions?"
"Any specific dishes she's craving?"
Nora hadn't expected Harold to make such a grand fuss and quickly insisted it wasn't necessary.
"Nonsense!"
Harold replied. "It's my granddaughter-in-law's first official dinner at home. If I don't make it a grand affair, people will think I don't care for you."
Nora didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Honestly—"
"She's not a picky eater. Just tell the chef to make something spicy, and make sure there are plenty of desserts."
"Excellent, excellent," Harold agreed immediately.
"Then I'll be waiting at home for you two to come over for dinner."
With that, Harold hung up.
Nora stared wide-eyed at her darkened phone screen, reeling at how quickly everything had been decided.
Noticing her expression, Nathan kept his eyes fixed on the road ahead, his voice softening. "Do you not want to go?"
"If you don't want to, I can go talk to him."
"If the person he found for me hadn't been you, this wedding wouldn't be happening."
"And I would have completely cut ties with him over it."
"Nora, you have no idea what your 'yes' actually brought me."
Nora was stunned by his confession. She murmured, "What did it bring?"
Up ahead, a stoplight turned red.
Nathan stepped on the brake, turned in his seat, and looked at Nora with absolute sincerity.
"Hope."
Nora's eyes widened.
Nathan continued, "Exactly the kind of hope you're thinking of."
"I'm stubborn and inflexible. If I don't want to do something, no one can force me, not even him."
"If I couldn't marry the woman I wanted, I was fully prepared to spend my life alone."
"Maybe I would have just stayed on the force until I was too old to chase criminals and finally retired. Or maybe I would have died in the line of duty during a raid on some violent cartel."
