Nora's heart hammered against her ribs.
She had no idea that Nathan's vision for his future had been so relentlessly grim.
"Don't say things like that."
Even though they were both pragmatists, talking about death felt like a bad omen. Nora suddenly regretted bringing the topic up at all.
"I want to say it."
Nathan checked the light, eased off the brake, and kept driving.
He didn't stop talking.
"I know that throwing promises at you won't give you the sense of security you need."
"But Nora, I need you to know this. The moment you marry me, you'll be the only granddaughter-in-law he ever acknowledges. He'll treat you like you saved my life."
Nora's eyes burned.
She had never realized just how essential she was to this family.
Especially a family like Nathan's, which lacked absolutely nothing and certainly didn't lack for women wanting to marry into it.
Yet Nathan had chosen her.
"Nathan, I—"
Nora opened her mouth but the words died in her throat.
Logically, after a confession like that, she should reassure him and give him an answer that would ease his mind.
But Nora had nothing of value to offer.
And her original reasons for agreeing to marry into the Peyton family hadn't been entirely pure. The guilt made it too hard to speak.
"You don't have to say anything."
Nathan shot her a soft smile. "Between us, I'm the one who craved you."
Boom.
Nora felt all the blood rush straight to her head, leaving her so dizzy that her brain essentially short-circuited.
She barely registered the drive back. By the time her senses returned, she was already sitting on her couch.
Nathan had stepped over to his apartment to grab something, and she hadn't even managed to ask him what he was doing.
"Valerie?"
Valerie Cruz, who was supposed to be miles away in the Arvendale Region, was standing right outside her apartment.
And she had just witnessed Nora making out with Nathan like her life depended on it!
Nora's face turned so red it was practically emitting steam. She looked from Valerie to Nathan, desperately wanting to explain but having no idea where to start.
"I..."
"He's..."
Valerie finally snapped out of her shock. She crossed her arms, her sharp gaze landing squarely on Nathan. "Well, my timing is terrible. Sorry for interrupting."
"Should I make myself scarce and come back in twenty minutes?"
Nora was speechless.
What kind of stamina did Valerie think he had?
Wait, why did her brain instantly understand that joke?!
