The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 386

"Now that he's transferred to Luminport City, is your regional network still planning to interview him?"

If Valerie still had that assignment hanging over her head, Nora figured she could try to pull some strings.

"I'd love to, but right now the network is prioritizing local community features."

"Besides, didn't I hear the region is hosting a cross-industry competition soon?"

"Your precinct's representatives will definitely be you two, right?"

Nora had to admit, Valerie was incredibly sharp.

She guessed an internal, unreleased event on the very first try.

"Yes."

Nora didn't try to hide it.

She rubbed a bit of skincare lotion onto her face. The soothing, floral scent hit her nose, making her pause.

"What's wrong?"

Noticing Nora's silence, Valerie leaned over from the bathroom doorway.

Nora pointed at the elegant bottles lined up on the vanity.

"These are the exact brands I normally use."

Valerie instantly understood. She smiled. "See, babe? You are incredibly lucky!"

The skincare products, the plush pajamas, the imported toiletries—everything had just been brought up by the staff.

No one had to ask. Harold had anticipated everything and quietly ordered it done.

For an elder of his stature to go to such lengths for the younger generation was exceptionally rare.

It wasn't just because the Peytons had money to burn.

In fact, the wealthier people got, the less likely they were to pay attention to such personal, considerate details.

"Grandpa Peyton told me your custom wedding dress is being designed by a top international master. When you go in for fittings, you have to let me take a million pictures."

"Ugh, I'm so jealous of you, babe!"

Nora thought that sounded out of character.

She had met Valerie's mother back in college.

She was a gentle, intellectual woman—the very definition of an elegant, upper-class lady.

Someone like that wouldn't force her daughter to marry some elderly academic.

"Honestly, anyone who reaches the level of professor must have something going for them. Do you know his name? I can run a quick background check for you."

Valerie's eyes went wide with betrayal. "Why would you check on him?! Don't tell me you're joining the 'marry Valerie off' cult! Not you too, Nora! You can't just drag me down with you because you're happily engaged. Not every guy is a top-tier catch like your Nathan!"

Nora couldn't help but laugh. "You don't even know who he is. How do you know he isn't a great catch?"

"Just tell me the name. Let me check."

Seeing Nora's persistence, Valerie reluctantly gave in. "I think his name is... Julian Croft."

Nora's fingers froze over her phone screen.

"Who did you say?"
