Harold blinked. "?"
Valerie muttered, "Wow."
Nora was speechless.
If her head weren't so big, she would have buried it entirely inside her soup bowl.
What did he mean by 'our house'?!
He said it so smoothly, making it sound like they were already living together.
Heaven knew they were still sleeping in completely separate beds!
The silence in the dining room was so deafening that Nathan finally realized the implications of what he had just said.
He cleared his throat. "I mean... in the future. Right now, I bring Nora breakfast, and we eat lunch and dinner at the precinct cafeteria."
"Plus, when we're on a case, meal times are unpredictable. If a chef cooks and we can't make it home, the food just goes to waste."
"Let them stay here and take care of your meals, Grandpa. We'll just come over to eat when we have the time."
Harold let out a soft "Ah," quickly bowing his head to place some food on Nora's plate, hiding the sudden tears welling in his eyes.
After all these years, he was finally seeing a human, domestic side to his grandson.
He always knew Nora was the lucky star of the Peyton family.
His eye for a granddaughter-in-law was flawless.
"Thank you, Grandpa," Nora said softly, noticing the old man's emotional shift, her heart warming at the gesture.
By the time dinner finished, it was quite late.
Nora wanted to drive back to her apartment, but Harold's enthusiastic hospitality wore her down.
Eventually, Nora and Valerie shared a luxurious guest room, while Nathan slept in his own bedroom.
The moment the guest room door clicked shut, Valerie grabbed Nora and started venting.
"Did you see the look your man gave me when we were dividing up the rooms? He looked like he wanted to murder me!"
"It's hilarious. What did I even do to him?"
"You'd better watch out, Nora."
Nora was in the middle of taking off her makeup. She paused and looked at her friend in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Calling him 'your man' felt terribly embarrassing.
"I wouldn't dare."
Valerie scoffed. "The name 'Nathan Peyton' strikes terror into the hearts of criminals across the region. I'm not using it casually."
Nora shot her a look. "What does criminals being scared of him have to do with you?"
Valerie was a professional, straight-laced network host. Why was she acting intimidated by Nathan?
"Because he's rejected me too many times."
"There was a phase where just hearing 'he declined again' gave me a migraine."
Valerie plopped onto the plush mattress.
"While you guys were at the station, I was chatting with his Grandpa. He said Nathan has been exactly this stubborn since he was a kid."
"If he doesn't want to do something, wild horses couldn't drag him to do it."
"Honestly, I'm just glad we only approached him through official channels. If I had ambushed him like some people suggested, he probably would have physically thrown me out of the building."
Nora silently agreed. Nathan really was the type to do exactly that.
