The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 391

The kiss happened so fast that Nathan barely had time to process it.

It wasn't until the door slammed shut, sending a rush of air against his face, that the sweetness of the moment finally washed over him.

With a soft smile playing on his lips, Nathan walked back to his room with a light step.

Inside her own room, Nora crept around like a thief. Her eyes darted across the space, and she let out a breath of relief when she didn't spot Valerie.

Just as she was about to dive into bed, Valerie's voice floated over. "Sneaking off to see your man?"

Nora turned her head and saw Valerie standing in the shadows near the door, a teasing smirk on her face.

A wave of embarrassment instantly flushed Nora's cheeks.

She touched her face and asked in a small voice, "Why are you standing in the dark?"

Valerie let out a knowing laugh.

"If I didn't stand here, how would I get to see the brilliant Dr. Hayes looking so flustered?"

"You and your man really can't be apart for a single minute, can you? I step away to take a quick shower, and you two are already sneaking around?"

"I just went to the living room to dry my hair. Don't be so dramatic."

Valerie wanted to tease her a bit more, but knowing how easily Nora got embarrassed, she swallowed the jokes sitting on the tip of her tongue.

"Alright, alright, I'll let you off the hook this time."

"Let's get some sleep."

Nora let out a long exhale.

"Okay."

They both climbed into the large bed, and Valerie was asleep almost the moment her head hit the pillow.

Staring at the ceiling, Nora replayed the events at the precinct in her mind. The more she thought about it, the more she felt like she had overlooked a critical detail.

But no matter how hard she tried, the answer slipped through her fingers.

Exhaustion soon pulled at her eyelids. She turned her head, caught sight of Valerie sprawled out in a chaotic sleeping position, and let out a soft chuckle. She reached over to pull the covers up over her friend, stifled a yawn, and finally drifted off to sleep.

...

Despite her sharp attitude, Quinn was struggling. Supporting the dead weight of a six-foot-tall, heavily built man was no easy feat. With Michael leaning most of his weight against her, the two of them could only shuffle toward the door an inch at a time.

The driver averted his eyes and started the engine.

Over the hum of the motor, he could still hear Quinn's muffled cursing.

"You're all a bunch of useless idiots!"

The driver pressed his lips into a tight line. He had only driven about two miles when his phone rang.

It was his work phone, a number only Michael's team had.

Not daring to waste a second, he quickly connected the Bluetooth and answered the call.

But his promptness still wasn't enough to satisfy them.

Ronan Lombardi's voice dripped with irritation and disgust. "Where the hell have you been? Why did it take you so long to pick up?"

"I'm driving..." the driver stammered. "I forgot to connect the Bluetooth."

"Didn't I tell you to set it to auto-connect? Why do you manually sync it every single time? You aren't a boomer, you know how a smartphone works, right? We've explained this to you a dozen times!"
